Adoption

Post by Ron »

I will start with hello to all as a new newcomer.
Right where shall i start, my Grandfather was adopted the information was told to me by my Aunty thats my grandfathers daughter.
He was born on the 13th October 1897 an illegitimate child born in Aberystwyth workhouse,my aunty believes is surname was Owens,so i looked on the web for the Aberystwyth workhouse, and came Upon this

13th October 1897 Mother Elizabeth Owens (child name) Thomas Arnold Owens, and in the last column (remarks singlewoman child illegitimate.
This has got to be more than a coincidence, what i would like to know is how do i find the original records.
i have been in touch with the Aberystwyth workhouse, they told me they do not carry out searches.
Help anyone [/url]

Hi Ron

This workhouse is now a hospital and will not have any records. You need to get in touch with Ceredigion Archives, County Offices, Marine Terrace, Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, SY23 2DE. I expect they will have any records that survive or if not, they will point you in the right direction.

Which website did you get the info about the birth of Thomas Owens?

It might be worth getting a copy of his birth certicate but it probably won't tell you many more detials - will confirm what you have though. The probelm is that before 1926 there was no formal adoption so it is often diffcult to get the child's birth name. But follow up the workhsoue records and the Owen possiboity - it does sound too much of of a coincidence to ignore

Good luck
Celia
