*Arc tbc* --Fathers name marriage cert

Post by mike74 »

Evening all,
Thought I would post this here as the family come from the Black Country
Just been looking again at the completed lookups that have so been kindly done for me, this may be a completly stupid question, but being new to this I'm not so sure of the answer. On both marriage lookups it has the father as being a John Newell, this would be correct with all the info I have gained from you guys and the census's etc, all the dates, years and names are correct. Maybe it's not a problem, but the father ( John Newell) died in 1854. Both marraiges ocurred after this date, so I was wondering if they would still put his name down as the father even though he died before these marriages.

Sorry for asking but I don't have a clue as to the answer

All the best
Michael

Hi Michael

In theory you would expect it to say deceased if the father had died before the marriage. But you can't rely on it. If the clerk just asked for the father's name then it may have been added without noting that he had died. Even the census can't be relied on because sometimes woman continued to be antered as "married" when in fact they should have been down as widowed. It can be infuriating!
