Can you identify where this photo was taken?

Post by Uncle_Ben »

This was obviously taken during the second world war years. Can you identify where it is in the UK?

I tried running it through Google Goggles, but it couldn't find anything similar to it.

Also, there's nothing of any use on signs (although that shouldn't come as a surprise considering it was during WWII.

However, I want to say it's somewhere coastal. Something about the design of the shops, width of the streets and also the streetlamp in the distance. It reminds me a "typical" British coastal town.

This could have been taken in France at the end of the war:
Not many people wandered around English towns in shorts, also
the man with the little girl has 'sunglasses', the little girl has
a 'smocktype' dress. There appears to be slight damage at the
top of the arch?.

Must have bad picture, can't see 'store' on my comp....
The soldier on the left looks more like a POW...no belt
and no shoulder patches.

It does indeed.

I inverted the colours to help bring out any text on signs etc, and the only thing which appeared was "Store".

Yes, it does say "Store".

As far as I know it was in the UK because I never heard my mother (for it is she) say that she went overseas.

An interesting comment is the idea that it is a coastal town. Amongst the other wartime photos that I have is a comment about Prestatyn but I can't decide whether it is where she was based or where her friends were during leave. Never been there so can't comment!
