*Arc tbc 24 hrs* -------------Getting into Parish Records

Post by familysearcher »

Using the census (going back to 1841) and also the BMD records, I have traced my lines back as far as those will take me. From there, I have the particular names and birth locations of the individual ancestors born just before the dates where when census and BMD began being recorded.

1. It is my understanding that my next step should be to delve into Parish records. How do I go about doing that, particularly considering that I live on the other side of the big pond, in the US?

2. What other records might exist, that I should be looking for, that might tell me something about these ancestors and/or their parents?

there is some parish records on line or you can buy the disc, if all else fails posted them and we will see what we can find, or we can point you to the right archieve who you may contact, they will do a search for you and post you a copy of the pr but this costs.
A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.

Parish records are divided into two distinct classes.

Transcriptions and the actual Parish Registers.

Transcriptions for many parishes are availalbe online but not at one central point.

I have brought CDs but also used IGI, FreeReg, Ancestry, TheGenealogist, FInd My Past and World Vital Records.

If you can see the actual Parish Register (Ancestry, FamilySearch, The Genealogist are placing quite a few online) then you generally get more information than in the transcriptions.

I have a few transcripts and I have to say they are excellent
of course is is always best to view the actual registers but transcripts do have
some info that the IGI doesn't have.
As they are normally done by volunteers you have to really check yourself with the actual registers when you can
but I do find them very helpful.

Also the archives may help you by sending you an actual image of the entry for a small fee.

What's the best CD to buy, and from where? I've used IGI and Freereg a bit, but am a little hesitant about buying the CD's as I don't know how complete they are. I've also heard about the one for burials.

Many of them are reproductions of books done by the various Parish societies.

Instead of forking out money for many of them you can download them for free.

For instance....

I have found the Shropshire sets from S&N to be the best value for Shropshire research and S&N software to be fairly good altogether.

Some of the items from BMSGH are excellent and I also like the Shropshire Family Historical Society software and fiches.

I tried searching some of the online records linked in this thread. Thanks for the suggestions. I didn't manage to find anything yet. Here are some of my ancestors, for whom I am hoping to find baptismal records.

1. James Wadham, born abt 1811 Plymouth, Devon, England

2. Mary Jane Harding, born abt 1813 Pilton, Devon, England

3. Robert Pratt, born abt 1808 Feldon Nork, Yorkshire, England

4. Jane Rott, born abt 1811 Seaton Delaval, Northumberland, England

5. Joseph Gorbutt (or Gorbet/Gorbut) born 13 Dec 1809 Manchester, England

6. Joan Brown born 09 Jun 1814 Paisley, Scotland

The Scottish one you need
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

I have a little credit and can try and help on there.
What more do you know about Joan and where did you get the date from?
I looked and the only i had seen for 1814 was on 1 jan 1814 and in Haddington East Lothian.
