Charles Gordon WHITE
Hi all,
I am researching Charles Gordon WHITE born about 1890 in Tursdale, Durham. Charles enlisted in Sept 1914 and died in June 1918:
Charles Gordon White
Birth Place: Durham
Death Date: 3 Jun 1918
Death Location: France & Flanders
Enlistment Location: Sunderland, Durham
Rank: Gunner
Regiment: Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Field Artillery "D" battery 181st brigade
Number: 33960
Type of Casualty: Killed in action
Theater of War: Western European Theatre
I live in Newcastle Australia and am struggling a bit with the records for this poor chap. In particular, I am trying to solve a mystery regarding the family he left behind. His wife remarried quite quickly, in 1919, and states in a letter to the authorities that she has one daughter to Charles b 1909 and is holding his medals for her to have later. However I have found records of 2 other girls b 1913 and 1918. I think these daughters both died (can't find records though!!) - my question being is there some way of knowing if Charles had some leave at home to concieve the youngest daughter?
I have also had some trouble trying to work out where Charles actually died, during what action, as the battalions etc seem to change names part way through the war. More than enough to completely confuse me .....
All help gratefully received.

A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.

Re: Charles Gordon WHITE
Had a read of his record but unfortuantely his summary sheets have the left hand side destroyed.
I can see his service was divided into three but where each part was served???
I know the first overseas part was Gallipoli and he didn't arrive till September 1915.
So he was in England till at least July/Aug 1915.
I can see he was given some leave jsut before being senf overseas.

On the records it as, from 23/01/18 to 6/02/18, could be leave, which fits with the 2 children being born in September 1918.

Re: Charles Gordon WHITE
Wow thanks so much Peter, Mark and Jimmy. I will chase up the websites thankyou
I am just watching a live broadcast of the ceremony for all the lost boys of Fromelles in France, being laid to rest at last. Very moving.
Jimmy can I ask where you found the information about the leave please? You've found an awful lot of info for me - greatly appreciated.
Charles' wife Beatrice lost a brother in France in 1918, and a first cousin in Gallipoli in 1915 and another in France in 1916. When looking for the lad lost in 1916 I was horrified to see how many with the same surname (Hadfield - not terribly common) died in just that one year. Three first cousins from Australia also served, but made it home safely.
Thanks again for your help - I will recommend this site to others!!!
regards,
Sharon in Oz
