Henry Newell

Post by mike74 »

Morning all,
Seem to have hit a major brick wall with my Henry Newell, he seems to have disapeared off the face of the earth. Just hoping someone could point me in the right direction as I'm new to this and not so sure where to look.
I'm looking for Henry Newell born 1834 in Dudley England to the parents John Newell and Ann Silvester, I have him on the 1841 census but rather strangely under the surname Noel and he is on the 1851 census with the surname Newell. I have the all the birth certs of John and Ann's children so can confirm that they are the same people even though their surname is different on the 1851 census, why it would change I don't know.

My problem is that after the 1851 census he just vanishes into thin air, he is not on any other census that I can see of. My only hope is that I did find a Henry Newell on the 1881 American census on IGI, the birth year is correct but it only says that he was born in England, anybody know how I can find out who this 1881 American census man is?

Any help would be greatly received
Cheers
Michael

Hi Mike,
I can't help as far as the american connection goes (have you tried incoming passengers to the US).
As far as the change in name goes, I've had that quite a lot. It could be a transcription error - ancestry is useless at transcribing - thay can even have two different spellings for the same surname for one household!!
The other possible reason is simply because a lot of people were illiterate, and you were in the hands of the person collecting the census information, so in my case Jinks becomes Jenks; and Jeavons has several mutations. Maybe the reason you can't find them after 1851 is due to this, the searches don't always bring up all variations even if you use soundex etc, so try with every variation you can think of.
Hope this helps a little! :-)

Morning Jimmy,

This is the one I have come across before, it is abit difficult to know if it's my Henry Newell as it only states his birth place as England. I'm sure there must be a way of finding out more about this Henry Newell. I am joining Ancestry today so hopefully will be able to get some more info. Maybe on the incoming passenger lists.
Thanks for having a look for me it is very much apreciated.

Cheers Michael

Morning Sue,
Thanks to all for the replies and sorry I'm abit late in replying ( been very busy at work). I'll give your suggestion a go and try every variation that I can think of. Your right there does seem to be alot of transcription errors, that is what confused me at first and led me to think I was looking at different people. Thought I would order the birth certs and hey presto it's them with different name. The rest of the family I can find living up North after 1851 but Henry and his mother just disapear. This family tree game is fun and interesting but so frustrating aswell, suppose that's half the fun though.

Thanks again

Morning Jimmy,
Yes, this is my Henry, after this census he goes missing. Hopefully the marriage you found for me is my Henry (fingers crossed), think the best thing to do is order the marriage cert or see if anybody can do a look up for me.

Cheers
