Scrapbook of Quirky info posted on certificates/ Parish Regs

Post by Northern Lass »

Hi I went to the archives today and did a marriage look up and written on it, with the Banns crossed out, was the following...

"These Parties were not married in consequence of the Banns having been forbidden by
Matthew Attwoods Parents"

then it was signed by the curate
this occurred on the 6 April 1879 at St Thomas Dudley and the couple then married in another church
on 28th April 1879 with the banns being read successfully

Now it would be great to have a Scrapbook of these certifs/Parish register entries- with shall we say additional info on!

We could see if it took off and then move it somewhere on the forum or keep here as a sticky

Does anyone have any to add on this thread?
If so post and we can add it to a main post

My favorite is what the Curate wrote in the register for one of my relatives marriages in Melverly in 1766......

This morning I have put a Tye
No man could put it faster
'Tween Matthew Dod, the man of God
And modest Nelly Foster.

Bastardry registers are always amusing to read. It seems like some blokes cope the blame if seen "within the vicinity" of the pregnant woman. I always thought you had to get a little bit closer than that :?:

Found this when looking at Catshill reg. in Bromsgrove which made me cry
Henry Barn child buried, name given as found by Barn by Henry??? I could not help but think of the poor girl who had this child and it raises all sorts of questions, did she have there, was it born dead. My husband thought I was mad as it happened in the early 1800's.
can understand if you do not want this to go on as it is a bit sad really.
