Sint Niklaas

Post by Rob »

Today in Holland(and Belgium) is Sint Nicolaas' Eve.This is when his birthday is celebrated by families and friends exchanging presents together with a rhyme.Usually about the person receiving the present!
Sint is helped by his mischievous Black Peters.Dressed in colourful Moorish clothes and blackened faces they roam the shopping malls throwing sweets and ginger bread to passers by.
The Sint arrives in Holland from Spain every year in November on his Steam Boat and young children leave a shoe/clog by the fireplace.Often the shoe is filled with carrots for the Sint's white horse.
They sing special " Sinterklaas" songs and to many families in Holland this festival is till more important than Christmas.

Good ay? Oh and you can give or receive chocolate or marzipan letters. You know like an R for Rob.
My wife gave me a P last year!!
Must have been a mistake.

It probably started out as an R. Think she just couldn't resist a nibble.
Some mistakes are too much fun
to only make once.

So long as you wear dinky little ankle socks clogs are very comfy.
We eat Turkey in our house. From the village butcher who imports them from Ireland and Irish sausages and a leg of pork bought from Asda in Oldbury and kept in the deep freeze till Santa comes!!
For afters its Christmas Pud also from Asda!!
