*ARCHIVE? * Miles Davis b1852 England

Post by brd43 »

Hi, I'm sorry I have so little on the location. He came to Canada and is in the 1891 census. He married Helen or Ellen Redmond b1856 in Canada. Canadian children were Elizabeth b 13 Apr 1876 d 3 May 1944, Francis Lawrence b1878 d 14 Dec 1909, John b 29 May 1882 d 24 Sep 1931, Mary Ellen b 20 Apr 1889 d Unknown, and Richard b 17 Nov 1893 d in WW1 26 Sep 1916. That may be more than you need to identify Miles, but better more than less I always say!

I cannot find Miles anywhere besides this Canadian 1891 census. I have the International Ancestry.ca membership and have found nothing for Immigration or searches of UK Census records. One tidbit is that he was a boilermaker and he had a Richard Davis living with him in 1891 who was also a boilermaker and was listed as a boarder. Richard however was also born in England and was a boilermaker but was 20 years younger. Interesting! If he was a son or brother, that census would not have called him a boarder.

This is my G Grandfather. I have no middle name, no parents, no birth location or exact date, no death, and just as little on his wife. I have seen her name as Ellen mostly but she was called Helen in a death certificate of a twin to firstborn Elizabeth who died in infancy. Any help would be enormously appreciated. I am kind of at a loss on how to proceed.

Thanks to all who might do some research on my behalf.
Best regards
Brian Davis, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

This is what I put on your other thread, although I must have made a mistake in the 1901 census :?

This looks like them in 1891,
Ste Anne Ward , Montréal Centre
Miles Davis, 39, Boiler Maker
Helen, 32,
Elizabeth, 10,
Francis 13,
John, 10,
Mary, 2,
Richard Davis, 19, England, Boiler Maker

and 1901,
Montréal (City/Cité) Saint-Gabriel (Ward/Quartier). District: Hochelaga,
Miles Davis, 18, March 1861, 40, immigration 1878, Boiler Maker
Ellen, wife,35, 11 Sept 1865, 35
Maud, daur, 2nd April 1888, 12
Richard, son, 17 Nov 1895, 7
Edward Brabant, Boarder, 8 March 1861, 40, ? Agent, French

I wonder if Richard on 1891 is his brother/relative?

Hi all
The 1881 census is not the right family, all the kids are wrong. The parents are so close though. Hard to believe. The note from Grangers14 is very interesting though. The 1891 census is the one that gave me most of the approximate birthdates for all the children, some of which I had. So, that is definately my family. Next, is the 1901 census there. The parents absolutely have to be my people! I mean, how many boilermakers called Miles Davis from England could there be in the same section of Montreal?! Here's the problems though. In 1991, he's 39 and she's 32, in 1901, he's only aged a year and she, only three years. I have no record of a Maud but I do have a Mary Ellen b 20 Apr 1889. But, here's where it gets scary. I have a Richard, birthdate comes from Army records, he is born 17 Nov 1893. The 1901 census is 17 Nov 1895. That could easily be a mistake though. A 3 and a 5 are pretty similar written. I have seen lots of transcription errors so far in my travels.

The older kids would have left home by 1901. Elizabeth, Francis and John would be gone. I wonder if Maud is Mary Ellen? Anyway, thanks for your searches.

Best regards

How can you rule this one out if you have nothing on them till 1891, there is Elizabeth b 13 Apr 1876, Francis Lawrence b1878.

Thank you Jimmy. I believe you are right. It didn't look right at first but it's actually a pretty good looking hit. Sorry about that.

Hi Jimmy, I'm taking a while to get used to the "dying" thing. Boy, that's scary. I am having a hard time with the possibility that I had so many more relatives in that family than I thought. I had already run into two children that died. Elizabeth had a twin, Miles Davis that died at 13 days, and I lost track of Mary Ellen mentioned in the 1891 census. Anyway, thanks again for your persistence trying to get thru to me. :)

Its quite possible that Mary in 1891 is Maud in 1901, the ages are the same.

Hi, They are both born on Feb 20th, although the census are saying they are a year apart. Still, the most likely explanation is they are the same person. I found the baptism certificate and her name was definately Mary Ellen and she was born in 1889, not 1888 like Maud.

I would like to concentrate on locating Miles in England, where he was born and who were his parents. The Canada 1901 census says he came to Canada in 1878 even though he had Elizabeth/twin Miles in 1876 and son Francis Lawrence in 28 Jan 1878. Of course, the 1901 census seems to be full of errors. His son Richards birth year is off by 2, Miles age is off by 8 or 9, based on the 1881 and 1891 census! Maud or Mary Ellen, if they are the same person, has a one year difference. All the days and months are right though?! I hope somebody can help me get a foothold in the UK with Miles. If indeed he came over in 1878, that would mean Elizabeth was born in England and he was married to Ellen or Helen Redmond in England, even though I have seen that he is from England and Ellen is Canadian. Dunno, I'm at a loss with this part of my tree. Thanks all of you.

Hi, thank you all again for your contributions. I am still searching for the parents and siblings of Miles Davis. Any other ideas to get UK data?

I am also searching for info on the wife of Miles son John. She was also a Davis and was born in Bath in 1888. Her full name is Amy Lillian Davis b 28 Nov 1888, Bath, Somersetshire d. 1996, Verdun, Québec, Canada. I now know three siblings Fred, Florence and Daisy. No birthdates, no nothing. This is info passed on from family. Anybody?

I think I need more memberships somewhere. I have written the Bath records place, maybe I will get a letter back from them. It's difficult to expect people to do research for you. Nothing a trip to Bath wouldn't solve, I guess. Hmmm...

All the best

Hi

Small addition to my previous post. Amy Lillian Davis b1888 in Bath came to Canada May 25 1906. I have found that on the Canadian incoming side but maybe it will be visible on the UK outgoing side by somebody who knows what they're doing. :)

Thank you. Yes, I already have the incoming (to Canada) record. What I really need is to work backwards. I know all about her life here in Canada. I would like her parents in England, birth location, etc. I think that's her in the birth index Bath Vol 5c P683, for all the good that does me.

She had three siblings that I know about , Fred, Florence and Daisy. I really need a birth certificate! Thanks
