Right, so you don't believe William Toy b 1796 was married to Sarah Toy b 1798 ?

Yes married
cos the marriage proves that
but don't feel....and just a feeling...that this is not the mother of William who marries thingymajig
He is a widower
so stands a chance that his first marriage is the mother of Wm Toy b 1820 ish

here...
13 Nov 1836 St Thomas Dudley
William Toy otp widower
Sarah Bibb otp widow
banns
X both
Wit - Thos Allen (signed) / X John Allen
this is a marriage I looked up today in the Parish register at archives
and as I thought it would say it said he is a widower
now that Wm Toy b abt 1793 is living near your William Toy on census in Crock st
I think that is his father
but I dont think Sarah is his mother

If you mean the marriage that I looked at in the St Thomas Dudley register
then it is at Dudley Archives
it definately says that he is a widower
and she is too

Right, are these Archives online? Or did you actually go and research it personally for me?

You've mistaken me for the Toy with the massive personal fortune.

Seriously though, I am starting to doubt whether or not William b 1820 was actually the son of William b 1796.

Re: Family Connections
I think it looks like that Wm Toy near or next to Wm Toy b 1820 on census is his father...possibly
I think he marries again in 1836 to that Sarah Bibb
but need more evidence like a first marriage

Re: Family Connections
Yeah on the 1861 census, Wm Toy b 1796 is 68 and living at 35 Crock Street, and next door is Wm Toy b 1820.
I noticed that BMD records started in 1837 for Marriages, so are we relying on Parish records? I think I also read that they weren't always completed due to a tax levied on them.

Re: Family Connections
Also thought, could it be possible that William Toy b 1820 was actually Sarah's son, and not William b 1796 - and that William adopted young William and gave him his name?

My family name I am researching is Toy, and I have managed to track them down to these places:
Stourbridge, Quinton, Ridgacre, Halesowen,
Hi Nick
I'm not sure if this has been suggested before or not...
there is a site which allows you to search for submitted records in the IGI, parish by parish. It can be found at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.anc ... ughwallis/
If you have an idea of which parishes the Toy family can be found in then you can look and see if there are more entries there.
If you have the time to click through and see who the parents were for each baptism then you can put together family groups with parents and children. This gives an idea of how many families lived in that area and sometimes allows you to sort out naming patterns. For more common names I've sometimes put the names on a spreadsheet so that I could colour code the patterns I saw. You may find that the Toy-s are all related at some point but it could be way back in time.
I helped a group sorting out the Marsden family in Derbyshire, they all seemed to come from one or two men in the 16th C but by the 19th C some were well off business men and others were poor agricultural workers and had no connection with each other.
Just a quick look at Halesowen has a Wareing Toy and a Job Toy - bet they would be easy to pick up if used as names by different generations.
The same site also has a search facility for surnames as middle names - that can be useful to use for unusual surnames as you can pick up along female lines where the child is named after the mother/grandmother' s surname.
Hope that helps you
Thanks, very helpful.

Re: Family Connections
Any advice on what I can do now?
May it worth noting down all the Toy's I find in the Halesowen parish and try and see where they lead and if a pattern emerges?
