The Gutteridge Family of Hathern, near Loughborough

I am trying to sort out my great grandfather, John Gutteridge of Hathern.
(born 1835). Can anyone show light on him and his family - he married Caroline Miles in Loughborough in 1867, and then they went to live in Nottingham, lured by employment in the lace trade. I'd be really grateful for sdome links. Thanks.

Since my original post my understanding of the Gutteridge origins has moved significantly forward. My original understanding that John Gutteridge married Caroline Miles was far from the mark.

John Gutteridge born 29 March 1835 married Caroline Tebbutt baptized 2nd May 1835. They were both born in Loughborough and moved to Nottingham where about 12 children were born including my grandfather Herbert Gutteridge born 4 July 1872.

John's parents were Charles Gutteridge baptized 5 Nov 1801 in Hathern and Rebecca Brookes baptized 8 Feb 1802 also in Hathern. Charles parents (and a few generations before) were from Walton on the Wolds.

But there were a number of Gutteridge in Hathern in the 1700s and 1800s who I have as yet failed to unscramble.

I would be interested to hear from anyone studying the name Gutteridge in Hathern as I woud like to understand how they all link together.

1. Isaac Gutteridge born abt 1818 in Loughborough married Ann of Hathern born about same time.
They are in 1861 census:

I would like to know
a) maiden name of Ann
b) parentage of both Isaac and Ann
c) any known relationship to Gutteridges of Hathern

2. Rebecca Brookes 1802 married Charles Gutteridge 1801 of Hathern (my g g grandfather).
I have Rebecca as child of Thomas Brooks 1776 Hathern and Margaret. I would like to know Margaret's maiden name, parentage, and date of marriage.

My guess is that Sarah Harriman is the daughter of Isaac and Ann, William snr is her husband and William jnr their son .....

Problem is, in 1851 I can't see an Isaac and Ann .... but I can see an Isaac and Elizabeth with a 5month old daughter called Sarah ....

That would make sense ..... I hadn't checked for a death of Eliz as you had already posted one .... guess that was a different Elizabeth!!!

Could really do with someone to check images for occupations though, just to be sure .....
I also wonder if 5 year old Jabaz in 1851 could be a mistranscription ...?!

Thanks, all. Particularly Nicki for suggesting that Sarah Harriman in 1971 census could be Sarah Gutteridge, Isaac's daughter.

Chased that up and found a marriage Dec Q 1867 Loughborough:

So, you guessed right, Nicki!

Also looked at 1881 census and found:
1881: 56 Mill Street, Loughborough, Leicestershire
William Harriman, Head, 41, Coal Merchant, Barrow on Soar, Leicestershire
Sarah Harriman, Wife, 39, Loughborough, Leicestershire
John Harriman, Son, 5, Scholar, Loughborough, Leicestershire

By now they have had a second son but the first (William from the 1871 census) has disappeared - maybe died young but can't find a death record.

Searching the censuses is confusing as there are clearly two Isaac Gutteridges of about the same age - one from Loughborough and one from Shepshed. It is theLoughborough one that I am interested in at present, and still wondering about his parentage and his wife, Ann's maiden name.

Well, I did think that Isaac from Shepsed and Isaac from Loughborough were one and the same .....
However, after a quick check of the I.G.I I'm not so sure ....

There is an Isaac Gutteridge Christened 07 JUN 1815 All Saints, Loughborough, Leicester, England ,
son of Joseph Gutteridge and Sarah
and there is also Isaac Gutteridge christened 01 JUL 1816 Shepshed, Leicester, England son of William Gutteridge and Ann

I'm assuming then that Isaac 1815 is the one you are searching for .....
what is confusing is that Isaac and Ann can't be seen in 1851 ....
It also appears that BOTH Isaac's have a daughter Sarah, of about the same age both born Loughborough ....

It seems possible that Ann's surname is Throne (see earlier posting for marriage reference)

There are quite a few "Gutteridge" christenings for All Saints,Loughborough on the I.G.I ..... very possibly all connected .....
Might be worth you having a look through them all .......!!

Well, after another quick scan through the census years, I can say that Isaac and Elizabeth and Isaac and Ann are definitely two completely different couples as both are apparent in 1861!

Still can't see Isaac and Ann in 1851
But have found both Isaac's in 1841 with family ....
this then is the Isaac and family I believe is "yours" from 1841 .....

Looked again at your earlier posting suggesting that Ann might be Ann Throne - and realized that I had chased the wrong hare and searched for Thorne!!!

I wondered, could she still be unmarried in 1841 and recorded as Throne?

Indeed she was:

But - what a stroke of fortune - in the same street and on the same census page is Isaac:

Sarah Gutteridge, 55
John Gutteridge, 30, Gardener
Isaac Gutteridge, 25, Gardener
Ann Gutteridge, 25, Dressmaker
Sarah Gutteridge, 15

So it looks very much as if Isaac married a near neighbour Ann Throne.
My guess is that, by her place at the end of the listing, Ann Throne is Thomas Throne's sister, perhaps in the house to assist her sister-in-law with the recent arrival!

So I now know more about Ann, and wonderfully, we find that Isaac's parents are Joseph Gutteridge of Loughborough and Sarah both born around 1786. Ah, but those names look familiar! I already have in my tree Joseph Gutteridge bap 1 Mar 1786 and married to Sarah Handley, and from the 1861 census:

So, same family with Isaac missing as he is now married to Ann Throne.

And I can now link back from earlier studies to Joseph's parents Joseph Gutteridge about 1750 and Elizabeth.
