war record

Post by kae »

Hi
i'm interested in finding out about my grandfathers war record
I know he was mentioned in despatches but this is all that's recorded in the London gazette : Chief Motor Mechanic Ralph Puttock, C/MX.92559-

a} is there any way of finding out why he was mentioned in despatches
b} the letters & numbers at the end - are they his service numbers
c} is there any way of finding out which boats he served on

thanks

Hi Karl,

You might want to check the following website as it personally identifies Ralph Puttock and the ships he was on. The mention in dispatches was related to Operation Jubilee - The Dieppe landings on 19/08/1942.

20.05.1944 - (07.1945)
HMS Copra (Combined Operations pay & drafting office) (for landing craft duty) according to a letter addressed 23.08.1944 at the time actually serving at HMS Braganza II (Bombay, India), care of Resident Naval Officer, Calcutta, India

The following link gives some info - http://www.combinedops.com/COPRA.htm

18.03.1946 - (04.1946)
HMS Warren (Combined Operations base, Largs) - http://www.combinedops.com/Training%20E ... S%20WARREN

http://www.unithistories.com/officers/R ... cersP.html

I hope the info above is useful.

Regards
