Post by mumbles »

This family change name on every record and back and forth so hard to track.
On bcc we have James Hems born 1835 and James Hemus born 1836
There are two lines to James , one from Thomas Hems born 1802 and Sarah Unknown born 1806
and one from Nehemiah Haymouse as below
Nehemiah Hemus born 1801 Northfield Worcs. married Dinah Witheford born 1804 Northfield Worcs. Married in March quartile of 1846 Kings Norton vol.18 page 431 and children were :-

James Hemus born 1837 Northfield Worcs.married Ellen Bollard born 1839 Northfield Worcs.Married in September quartile of 1857 Kings Norton vol.6c page 623 ( Surname noted as Hames)
Dinah Hemus born 1838 Northfield Worcs.

Solomon Hemus born 1846 Northfield Worcs. married Sarah Partridge born 1846 Northfield Worcs. Married in June quartile of 1866 Kings Norton vol.6c page 737

Note :- It would appear that Nehemiah and Dinah had all these children before marriage in 1846

Note Surname is not transcribed correctly on transcription and looks like Hemous

Sorted by maureen surman of woodgateandthevalleyhistorygroup:-
"Just looking at the Line 2 on page 4 of your notes.
James Hemus ~ Ellen Bollard. This is not Nehemiah's lineage.

The dates I have for the children of Dinah Witherford, in the absence of my book, I believe I took from the 1841 census. Your note tallies however.
James Witherford, a Farmer, married Harriet Read aged 24 at St. Laurence Church, Northfield in 1861. James's father is listed as Nehemiah HEMUS a nailor. Whether Nehemiah was in fact his father or was thought of as such living with him from a young age ....... ?

The name Nehemiah Hemus is quite familiar to me as in the past I have looked into this family in connection with the WITHERFORDS.
The quick glance I have had at your notes, please forgive me I will need some time to look through them all, confirms what I have.
Dinah's children were all baptised WITHERFORD and from memory I think they continued to use this surname despite their mother marrying Nehemiah in 1846 at which time he was a widower and his father named as Joseph a shoemaker.

In the 1836-51 Rent Book of the Lord of the Manor, there is a note:
Nehemiah Thomas Witheford (no. 98 on the index) entry states
Nehemiah Hemus late Jos. (Jas.?) Witherford. Lot 3 near Bartley Green.

I have pinpointed the house as being in Scotland Lane near to where King Edward VI Five Ways School is now, or at that time near Bartley Farm.
