I need a book!

Can someone recommend a good book
I have my new glasses so can see the print now
cost me an arm and a leg too

How about 'The Mystery of the Moaning Banshee' by Barbara Carroll , not read it lady in front of me at library was checking it out and the title caught my eye.

How about the Shardlake series - C J Sansom

Thomas Challoner series - Susanna Gregory

The White Queen - Phillipa Gregory

Worth considering -

Small Island - Andrea Levy (recently on TV and very readable)

The Lemon Tree - Andrea Levy

Anything by Santa Montefiore

Have recently tackled Wolf Hall and did not get on with it at all, in fact
five friends have all given up on it!!

If you like reading about knights and their ladies, try The Greatest Knight - Elizabeth Chadwick
and its sequel The Scarlet Lion

Strictly speaking - yes. Although I read Dark Fire first, they more or less stand on their own.

Hello Kate,

I forgot to say thanks for recommending the Susanna Gregory series of "Thomas Challoner" books. My hubby's hooked on them, he's got them all lined up to read. I'll have to get them one by one as it takes me ages to read a book as I keep re-reading the nice bits :-)

Thank you, thank you for posting that! I gave up on it too and felt really bad, it being a prize winner and all. feel much better now.

If you want a well written historical novel with a twist (and a bit of enthusiastic close encounters of the personal kind) try the series by Diana Gabaldon, first one is Outlander. Heroine gets transported back to 1743 and embroiled in the politics of the time. Really great read.

Gosh I feel so much better knowing others were not bowled over by Wolf Hall. I felt it was very overhyped - the fact that characters were continually referred to as 'he' - I had to keep checking back - it could be Cromwell, the King or whoever, I felt it was most unsatisfactory.

Doubtless someone will have liked it, I felt so guilty as my daughter bought it me for Christmas, I haven't told her yet I didn't rate it!

A series of books which I am very fond of are Edward Rutherfurd's Sarum; London and The Forest. I live about a mile from Old Sarum so it was particularly interesting to me (in fact I've read and re-read it many times). My paper back eventually fell to pieces and I've now got a first ed. hardback - still going strong!

Personally, I like my literature in the 'dark' side, so anything Stephen King, James Herbert. I also like Richard Matheson's books :P

Thanks Teifi for the recommendation, I've just started reading it and am really enjoying it. The thickness of the book :o goodness only knows how long it will take me to read it.

Barbara Erskine writes historical mystery novels can't put them down once I start a new one, mainly have a Roman link but she wrote one called Whispering Sands about ancient Egypt which was spooky, her novels tend to be set in the past and present.

I have just discovered Elizabeth Chadwick enjoying about Medieval times a period of history I don't know a great deal about.

I have just finished my Michael Connelly book Scarecrow
it was good but I have a Jeffrey Deaver one next
