Moss Family Eel St Oldbury
Hi
I am Roy Philpotts and I have just joined the site. I have posted a previous message with my interests.
However what led me to the site was the Eel St link which I see has been archived.
the Moss family is my family or more specifically my grandmother's family.
Elizabeth Moss is my Grandmother, she married Harry Philpotts.
I was aware of the Eel St link because my late father Eric told me he was born there, presumably at no 14.
He always used to talk of Tangy Debney ( or Devney?) who was a boxer connected with the Tiger Inn. Does anyone know more of this.
The Moss tree on Black Country connections has demolished a couple of wall for me and I would like to add other data that I have regarding Philpotts.
Rob seems to be well linked to Eel St and I am sure he would probably have known my father and grandfather.
Very best wishes to all
Roy

Re: Eel St...brought back for Roy....-David Moss b abt 1876

I know the Philpotts. They came from Florence Road Rounds Green Oldbury
My uncle David was Elizabeths Moss's sister who married Henry Philpotts.
I know Janet Philpotts who married Joey Tonks and i think the link with the Tiger pub Eel Street could be Joey's mother who was a Grainger.
The Graingers lived in the old Tiger pub house when i was a kid in the 50's.
Joey ,sadly no longer with us,was a great footballer who went to Good Shepherd and Albrights and they came from Churchbridge.
Put your info on BCC Roy .It's a brilliant site run by a lovely homely northern woman.

Hi Rob
you are quite right, the Philpotts did live up Florence Road. No 19 to be precise.
There was Henry (Harry) and Elizabeth (nee Moss known to all as Cissy). There was my late Dad Eric. The other siblings were Norman (now passed), Alan, Trevor (the athlete), Donald and Janet. Janet did marry Joe Tonks, wonderful man. He was fire officer at Accles + Pollock where I also worked when I left school. After my grandad Harry passed (before I was born) Elizabeth married Stan Bagnall and they continued to live there for a number of years until the glamour of Lion Farm Estate beckoned. Most of us ended up on there.

He's listed here, but not his actual name...... here
Tango Debney(Oldbury) total bouts 19 active 1910s to 1920s
A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.

Re: *Arc tbc* --Eel St.......-David Moss b abt 1876
Thanks for that info on Tango Debney on the boxing site. I was beginning to think I had dreamed it.
I always thought it was Devney although Debney was always a good alternative seeing how popular it is in the BC. In fact I went to school with 2 brothers named Debney.
Cheers

Re: *Arc tbc* --Eel St.......-David Moss b abt 1876
1901 census Tiger Inn Eel Street
Jonah Debney head 32 publican born Oldbury
Emma Debney wife 30 born Netherton
Thomas Debney son 9 born Oldbury
Charles Debney son 5 born Oldbury
Jonah Debney son 1 born Oldbury
John Debney boarder 56 widower labourer born Oldbury
I wonder which one was "Tango" Debney the boxer?
My bets are on Thomas the age fits with Tango's boxing career 1910-1920.
Over the road from the Tiger was another family of Debneys and at the top of Eel street was another family of them. All related?
Next door at 1 back of 14 lived the Moss's.
I spoke with my mother today and she tells me she can't remember the place being a pub but that the building that housed the pub was later converted into 3 houses.
That's how i remember it as well .The house with the big step!!
