Help trace London immigrant GGmother in 1800's

Post by Bucklerclan »

I wonder if there were any immigration laws in England in the 19th century and if the resulting documents were archived and might still be available for London?

My great Grandmother Maria Christina Stupakoff was German and spoke little English. For some strange reason she met and married my great grandfather Alfred Buckler who was a carpenter in London ( born Isle of Wight).

A note I have, with obscure origins, says Maria was born in Hamburg 8/1/1849 ( or 1/8/1849?) . Her family was certainly from Hamburg. My 3rd cousin who lives in Hamburg has found all of Maria's siblings listed in the Hamburg archives but can find no record of Maria.

Maria or Marie Christina was known as Mary Christine in London. She had a third name which I think was Wilhelmina.

She lived in London up to the 1st World War but, when war was declared in 1914 she was visiting her family in Hamburg and was forced to stay for the duration of the war incommunicado, until discovered by the Red Cross in 1918. She was eventually returned to London alive and well . I have no date for her marriage or death.

Thanks so much Jimmy and MathsGirl. You have been an amazing help. You have found my exact family and proof that my GGrandmother did exist and I had not imagined a Southampton connection. Maybe Alfred Buckler wanted to marry away from his family in the Isle of Wight, as they may not have approved of his marrying a German woman. I also have a vague feeling that an earlier generation of Stupakoff may have lived in or near Southampton for a while, possibly Simon Stupakoff, a taylor.

I still need to find a document which would confirm what district in Germany Mary was born.

Thanks a lot pals.
