I live near Newcastle, NSW Australia.

My great grandparents as well as my great-aunt and great-uncle on the Hughes side of my family were all born in Wallbrook Coseley. These were Samuel Hughes, an engine driver, his wife, Mary Ann nee Nock (her father was James Nock a bricklayer) and their kids, John Hughes (born 1872) and Edith Hughes (born 1877). Samuel and May Ann's son Enoch Arthur Hughes, born at Woonona NSW in 1882 was my maternal grandfather. John and Edith remained unmarried and led interesting lives in Australia. They died in 1959 and 1970 respectively. I remember them fondly.

I have traced my Hughes family connection in Coseley back to my 2xG GF, Edward Hughes who was born in 1803 (possibly in Northfield, Worc) and died in 1863 at Earl St Coseley. He married Mary Fletcher at Kinswinford in 1830.

At the moment I am stuck on the birth/baptism of Edward Hughes and noone seems to know who he parents were.

My immediate Hughes family ancestors migrated to Australia in 1878. I have traced the Nock, Cope and Fletcher families back a few generations, as well as all these three families plus the hughes family forward to the 1911 UK Census. Although geneological forward-tracking has its uncertainties, I wanted to discover what happened to my ancestors who did not come to Australia. Mostly they had useful lives in the Coseley area. In fact, one of my great-great uncles, Edwin Hughes, who married Sarah Timmins in 1860, went from being a coal miner to running a grocery shop in Green St Coseley between 1881 and 1891. In his latter years, Edwin let his sons and a female relative deal with the shop while he helped his son Daniel in the latter's assurance business.

There are still many gaps in the story of the hughes family from Earl St Coseley (the family cottage in Newcastle NSW was proudly called "Coseley") and I am hoping I can discover more from this group.

G'Day..I will say hello even though you guys stole our Soccer Cup

It is fascinating to see how those who stayed behind faired to those who emmigrated.

I am doing that back to the early 1770's and hope to put it in book form.

Generally I have found the life expectency for men in the Black Country is far shorter than those who emigrated up until the mid 20th century.

I have found the infant mortality to be about the same. Mainly typhoid killing them in Australia but also simple diseases due to lack of medical help.

I think the immigrants ended up diversifying a bit more, but I wouldn't say there is a big difference in wealth.

Anyway, rambling on.....

I think you will find this place is full of people who will help.
