Births/Bapts-John Murphy--Time to sort out Great Grandad....

Post by MarkCDodd »

John Murphy - Birth 1st Qtr 1866 West Bromwich 6b 696. (Should be somehwere in Oldbury...)

Can the names of his parents be confirmed. We have his father as Patrick on BCC but his Wedding Certificate says Thomas.

His mother should be Charlotte Waterhouse.

Perhaps it may be worth checking either side as well.

Mary Murphy born 3rd Qtr 1860 West Bromwich 6b 586.

Hannah Murphy born 1st QTR 1869 West Bromwich 6b 686.

I would ask that the Baptisms be check as well but they are Roman Catholic and a visit to the church archives would be needed....

Yes, I have the marriage certificate from the registry office.

That is the one that mentions Thomas as his father. It is witnessed by Charlotte's father, Andrew, and a Sarah somethingorother.

I am not happy purchasing more certificates at the moment as the last few have been like this one, very hard to read and not the quality I expect.

Apparently the microfiche shows the information up lovely....

The Roman Catholic Registers have recently been moved to a Catholic Archive center. They would be in Latin...

The information on BCC is as I have entered it but this marriage certificate with Thomas as the father has made me nervous about the whole thing.

This family has been a nightmare to follow as they did all they could to hide their Irish heritage for quite a while.

There is no evidence Catherine had been married more than once and there are no Thomas Murphys, apart form Great Grandad's brother, in the tree.

The marriage certifs you can if ordering from Dudley order the photocopy of the actual marriage certif
which is exactly the same as the one in the actual PR on fiches or films.

I always order photocopy.

Info from Dudley Regis Office

As discussed earlier, this is the information relating to certificate
production in Dudley registration district at present.
>
> Records for Dudley are split across our 2 offices
>
> Events registered from 1837 to 1939 (incl) are held at the Dudley
office
>
> Events registered from 1940 to 2007 (except for those events in
registrars' current registers) are held at the Stourbridge office
>
> Applications can be received in person at either office and will be
forwarded internally for processing. Applications by post should be sent
to the correct office, but can be forwarded if received in the wrong
location.
> Online applications are accessed by both offices.
>
> A '2 working days' service is offered for contemporary records,
historical records are processed within '5 working days'. All certificates
are posted 1st class to the applicant or can be collected from the
issuing office. A priority same day service is available for an additional
fee per application.
>
> Pre 1969 birth and death certificates are the 'type and print' style
taken from the original register entry.
> Post 1969 birth and death certificates are photocopied from the
register entry onto a certificate form. Births and deaths registered since
1990 are printed from the computerised records.
> Marriage registrations are photocopied onto certificate forms.
>
> Please note that occasionally a photocopied entry may not be clear
and an alternate method has to be used.
> "

note...do check prices yourself with the regis office as the prices have changed

See the last line about photocopied certificates not always being clear. That is is my experience with the last half a dozen and why I thought it would be better to view them on the fiche if possible.

They take no time to adjust the photocopy to improve the quality.

If I picked up a certificate and opened it in the office and htey were of the quality I have been receiving, I would have no hesitation taking it back to the counter and asking them to try again.

Bit hard from the other side of the world....
