*Archived * - Elizabeth Taylor- Broadmoor 1871

Post by Tex »

Included in my tree is an Elizabeth Taylor, wife of Josiah Pearson Taylor. Elizabeth was nee DAVIES born in Rhuddlan Flint c1831. She married Josiah Taylor at St Thomas Dudley on 11th Feb.1856.
In 1861 the couple were living in Hasbury. By 1871 Elizabeth was incarcerated in Broadmoor, and by 1881 she was in Woking Womens Prison for the criminally insane. I think that she spent the next 20 years there. I would like to know why she was committed. A researcher has been unable to find anything at Kew which I find strange. However, that being so, I wonder if it is possible to find anything relating to this in the records of the Worcester Assizes. Would it be likely that she could be committed purely on the say of a local doctor, or would her committal be the result of a court case ?
This really is my major brick wall :(

poss local archives might have newspaper micro film, broadmoor wasnt opened till 1863 and it look like it was for the crimanal insane so she must have done something?

Dudley archives are very helpful they may be able to advise.
They helped me with my William Rose and the newspaper articles etc.
They have court information not too sure at what level but worth asking them.

Well, to be honest, I have looked for possible death registrations, but Elizabeth Taylor seemed to be the favourite name in that period, and I suspect that I might have to buy perhaps a dozen certs before finding the right one

Many thanks to all the kind folk for their suggestions.
I THINK that Elizabeth was still alive at the 1891 census located in Woking Prison, which of course by then had become Brookwood Asylum. It is possible that she was released after this, but I would think it highly unlikely. I think that perhaps the most likely death registration is the one in 1894. The certificate would show the reason for death, but I hardly think that it would explain the reason for her incarceration ?

Many thanks anyway, for your efforts and suggestions, they are much appreciated.
