I'm a bit stuck!

Hi everyone,

I'm new to all this, and I've got a bit stuck.

I'm trying to find out more about John William Stott and his wife Mary. I know where they're buried, I have a burial certificate and I'm going to try to find the grave soon. But I can't find his marriage or other records because John William Stott is such a common name - there are loads of them! How do I know whether the records I find are the right ones? Any clues or tips to get me going again?
I also think they MAY have had a son called Harold. On the burial certificate that I have there's a Harold Stott buried 13th July 1924 aged 19 - but when I search in 'Deaths' I get two likely possibilities - how do I know which is right? I'm hoping the gravestone might give me some more information?

Do I now need to request birth certificates from the registry office? And if so, how do I do this, and is it expensive? I don't really want to order one, and then find out it's the wrong one! Or is that just all part of the fun?

some one might able to pick john and mary up on the 1911 censes with a poss son harold c 1905 ?


yes we all order certs and got the wrong one , there ususally 7 pounds each

He definitely died in Royton, Oldham, Lancashire. And was more than likely born there too. Almost certainly Lancashire - but could be Middleton, Shaw, Oldham, Rochdale if not Royton.
Definitely lived in Royton for much (if not all) of his life, and his address for much of that was Dryclough House, Shaw Road, Royton, Oldham.

I thought I'd found a couple of likely marriages, but they don't give spouse's name, so it's impossible to tell. Grrr.

People can only see what you have on Ancestry if they subscribe too so for the rest of us it doesn't tell what you know.

Do I understand correctly that you have the burial certificate for Harold so know when he was buried, and his age but not when he died?

You may get that off his grave stone, yes. Otherwise if you need to order a certificate then you can give extra information if you have it, that helps reduce the number of mistakes.


The 1911 census might help, as Pete says, if you can find Harold with his parents then you will have a better idea of when and where he was born so you might be able to find his birth certificate and that will give his mother's maiden name which should help pin down her marriage. Sometimes a sibling is easier to locate, if they have an unusual name.

Funny, if I'd been asked I would have said that Harold Stott was an unusual name but obviously not!!

OK, I couldn't find any on that site. But when I search FreeBMD on Ancestry I get two that are pretty much identical. Both Oldham, 1905 and Oct-Nov-Dec.
There's no real way of knowing is there? Would this be where I just order the birth certificate to find out?

Here you go Rachel the 1911 census this should help you find them a bit easier, looks like Mary's maiden name could have been Lees.

If he died July 1924 aged 19 then I think he could have been born Jan-June 1905 or July-Dec 1904 couldn't he? So the Jun qtr 1904 is a possible too isn't it?

If viewing the grave stone is an option I would start there - and the 1911 census if you don't want to wait.
