Forum Interest? (The lack of)

Post by ebelthite »

This forum needs some advertising, to get some more users on it.
After returning to this forum after a few weeks, only to discover that there are not many new users or new posts, it seems that nobody is really interesting in this forum...

So could somebody spread that word, or it will die of death and fade away.......

As a professional webmaster, I'm all too aware how difficult it is to get initial traffic to a site these days. The site does actually have a Google adwords program running though, and also now seem to be climbing it's way up search results. The main thing though is that until there's a significant amount of content, people tend to enter the site, then head straight out again. Basically, what's needed more than anything is a decent amount of posts. So, post away! Even if it's just those insurmoutable or unanswerable questions that have been stuck at the back of your mind, that you think no-one can answer!

too many web sites competing

Post by nealesheldon »

Lack of interest stems from the time it takes for a website to be advertised on search engines, this is a science in itself, unless you pay £££ up front to get a top 10 listing.

There are hundreds of websites all competing for the same customers.
Established forums/newsgroups have built up their followers over a number of years, so don't expect too many hits to start with.

I suppose the question that is going to be asked on the soc.genealogy.britain newsgroup ,from where i found this forum is

why the need for yet another forum?
i can imagine all the usual know it alls will have a field day attempting to ridicule and denounce.

any way good luck in this venture

To be honest, the main reason for setting it up in the first place was the fact there didn't seem to be any decent UK specific forums with good levels of functionality.

With regard to search engine listings - the site now appears very high on Google's UK ranking. I've done very little over the last couple of months to increase awareness elsewhere though, which is something I'm now starting to look at. The forum's also just a fraction of what I've got planned. The links database is now up and running (if a little hacked together at the moment!), and I'm working on other bits to add soon.

Hi Folks!

"lets all join hands and try to contact people interested in this forum"

I have very recently joined and cannot believe the lack of interest. We are constantly told about the enormous growth in the subject, I'm beginning to think its a myth.

I found this forum by simply typing "genealogy+forum" in Google, and there it was, very near the top.

I'm sure there are a number of interested members but they soon lose interest through lack of Posts and replies. I've seen some Posts here with over 1000 viewings and just a couple of replies. The 1000 viewings must have taken years. WHATS WRONG!!! An earlier post by Scorpio speaks of the lack of thanks from members, for work carried out on their behalf. Nobody is looking for a grovelling Baldrick but have these people no gratitude, not to mention simple good manners, or even the desire to communicate with simmilarly interested people. It's not the best way to get more help, is it!!!

I belong to one other forum, I only joined in December 2007, its constantly active with about 30,000 members, from all over the world, who contribute and communicate "the principle object of a forum" There are probably more Posts there in 10 minutes than there are here in a week. There are classic threads that keep going through members interest, curiosity and comradeship.

Don't get me wrong, i haven't joined to moan, but unless "you" members use your forum, its going to shrivel up and die. It is you! show that you can do better, be fair to those who devote their time to keep it running. (no they haven't paid me).

I'd be interested in members views. If anyone bothers to read this.

In a nutshell Howard - though it says 307 members in reality there's less than 50 and only about a dozen [at most] really active

Hi Alec

Thanks for the reply. Its sad that the forum is not thriving, given all the effort involved in setting it up and keeping it going. I'm no expert, I don't have solutions that would guarantee success. The thing that may help is: Moderators starting new and interesting Topics, that may guide people here and inspire them to join/contribute, after all, it's free.

The other forum I belong to is not Genealogy, it's the "Great War Forum". If you want to see active and interested, it's the place to look. I found it by chance, I Googled a: name+regiment and it took me there. The info I have found there is astonishing, hence I tried Googling: "genealogy forum" and was guided here. I suppose there are other genealogy forums that are more successful. With a name like this, it should be number 1.

Regards

Howard
