Leylandi turning brown

Has anyone had any problems with their Leylandi or fir trees turning brown?
Someone said it was an insect we have lost a beautiful tree and noticed today over the
road 2 are brown

My daughter had two go brown in the summer , but don't know what caused that.

I have Leylandi all round my house and a couple of them went brown a couple of years back.
Several explanations depending upon the age and situation of your trees could be the cause.
If newly planted drying out and wind scorch are most likely causes. Nearly always best to plant out small trees, they'll get established and even overtake bigger specimens that you might be tempted to put in.
Protect newly planted ones with a wind break, also water in well, insert a piece of pipe into the planting hole so that when you water them the water goes down into the roots where it's needed. Also uncurl any roots that are going round and round the base of the pots, it'll help to ensure more stability as the trees mature. Conifers are relatively shallow rooted. If they are old, again wind scorch and old age. They do tend to die off at the base growth.
Could just possibly be pest damage or has a dog taken to marking its territory!! :lol:

Rob that's a good tip for watering , next time we plant a tree I'll add some pipe. :wink:

Wow!! Bot Kanker!! :o
Control measures are similar to those described for Seridium canker. Prune out diseased branches below the dead wood. To minimize stress, follow proper establishment procedures, space out plants, mulch with pine bark or pine straw, and irrigate during lengthy periods of hot and dry weather. Avoid heavy fertiliztion, particularly in late winter and the fall. Fungicides have been shown to be ineffective against bot canker.
This is bad.Real bad!! :shock:

Oh well I suppose it's too late now tree has gone!

I love to see the old trees we have one over 300 yrs old a lime tree
I will get a photo of it in the village

There is quite a lot on Google regarding the conifer aphid. It seems this has been responsible recently for Leylandii turning brown. However one writer reckons that milder ????? winters have caused the aphid to survive and spread.

Think it may not spread quite as quickly after this winter.

Not a lot you can do. Cut it down!
