*Arc tbc* --HOLDEN from Oldbury
Hi everyone,
This is my first post to the BC art of the forum. My husband is a Black Country lad and must take all the blame for my FHR addiction. It started when we cleaned out his garage and found a box with a load of certs, a bible and mourning cards for people he'd never heard of. I'm now trying to further a line of his family from Oldbury.
His gg grandparents are William HOLDEN and Hannah HUGHES. They married at St Thomas Dudley on 25 Sept 1837. Their parents were William HOLDEN a miner and William HUGHES a Furnaceman. William jnr according to census was born about 1818 in Oldbury. Hannah came from Tipton born abt 1820. They in the best BC tradition had a large family; Maria 1837, Mary Ann 1840, Rosanna 1842, Mercy (g grandmother) 1844, William 1847, Selina 1852, Levi 1855, Jacob 1857.
So; is anyone else interested in this family? Does anyone have access to Oldbury PRs....if so is there any sign of William HOLDEN born abt 1818 father William.
Best wishes to all

Re: HOLDEN from Oldbury
Many thanks to everyone so far who has posted a reply. I didn't expect such a good response. I'm having a look now to see what new gems you've found for me. One other bit of info I do know about William HOLDEN (born c1818) is that he was killed in a mining accident.
In an extract from www.cmhrc.co.uk/site/database register of deaths and injuries
Name: HOLDEN W
Age: 50
Date: 27/11/1868
Year: 1868
Occupation: Pikeman
Colliery: Portway Hall
Owner: WH Dawes
Town: Oldbury
County: Worcester
Notes: Fall of coal in thick coal pit. He and another were taking out the spurns and timber to throw a fall when a bump forced a piece of coal on him.
Does anyone know what a Pikeman did. I've googled it but only found military refs. Also does anyone have any knowledge of this colliery. On hs death cert it's listed called Lamb Colliery.

In a Durham list of mining occupations I found:
Pikeman 1894: Workman using a pick
It could be that it meant something different in the Black Country:
I remember when I visited a mine they described that one way of getting at the coal was to dig away at the bottom of a seam - using timber to hold up the coal above and then when they had gone in about 2 feet they pulled the timber (is this the spurns?) out and let the seam above drop - - from the notes this sounds as though it might have been when the accident happened!

Re: HOLDEN from Oldbury
That's a coincidence Portway Hall has been mentioned again!!
Angeliana if you go to the Local History in The Black Country and click on the Whiteheath thread and click on the place kindly supplied by Mallosa you will find a photo of Portway Hall and that's where the coal mine would have been!! Around that area were many small pits in the 19th century.
Eel Street was wher he lived and in fact Portway Road is the street next to Eel Street going up to the Rowley Hills to an area still known as Portway today.

Re: HOLDEN from Oldbury
As I said my description came from a Durham list and the words sometimes vary from place to place --it might be worth contacting the Black Country Museum and see whether they will give you any more info.
