YES always --see proof of marriages wits etc real evidence of rels -its surprising what a difference it makes

I agree, Check everything. Even things of your own from when you first started out.
Its so easy to make typing errors too...
I find half the fun of it is sussing it all out yourself
But love to look and try and help others, all part of the addiction I think!

I have experimented on Ancestry just to see how many Lemmings use it.

I picked one of my more popular families that 14 others were researching. I created a fictional child and had them dying before they were born, then marrying after their death to another fictional sibling who I made 210 years old at the time of the wedding

11 people just merged into their tree and only one sent a questioning e-mail.

Sad really....

They were shocked when I e-mailed them and told them what rubbish they just accepted as gospel.

"But shouldn't the software stop that?"

It will warn you as you enter the information that things are not quite right but it lets you do it anyway.

When you merge the information into your tree, no checks or warnings are involved.

Sometimes I add stories to particular people that explains why my information is correct so that the smarter ones who do check will feel more comfortable with the "minority" data.

You will get that everywhere though Mark, unless of course its own web site.
I have known, now you too , people put in things so they can identify people just copying.
I dont agree with just copying, what fun have they missed?
Names are just names unless verified and more interesting to add "flesh" to bones and bring back and know what sort of life they had.
I cant get to a lot of places I would like to, to inestigate further, online is the main option for me. Unless of course I could get a CD with things on that interest me.
I made a big mistake when buying some CD's that the area I was looking at was border counties and not what I bought, but they are still useful
Ancestry is very useful, same as LDS and others but not as gospel.
Check and go back and check!
Further you go back how can you identify the right family? Unless of course there is more documented information? Many people cant for sure.
Naming patterns are a big example!
