Hi, I have just started to do my family tree after a break of 8 years. In that time I moved away from the motherland (Black country) to the hills of Hampshire. Unfortunatley I don't have access to the local archives centre in Walsall any longer. Can anybody answer a few questions for me.
1. Any tips on where to look for info when access is not on your doorstep?
2. Does anyone have anything on the Skitt family from Portobello?
3. I have got back to 1827 but all records (on the internet) that I can find stop. I have a feeling that the father from there back may have come from Shropshire, but how would I find that out?
Any info would be great
Thanks
Dan Skitt

Re: The 'Skitts' from portobello
There are Skitts in Shropshire born as early as 1769 in the 1841 census, Dan. Who would be the earliest Skitt for whom you have a DOB and place of birth?
There are also a number of Skitts of Shropshire in private family trees on Ancestry. It might be worthwhile contacting some of these tree owners.
Cheers,
Di

Hi Dan
Well do post what you have and we will help you with any info that we have.
The IGI is good and the bmsgh may stretch to cover the area you need depending on where they married.
We all have access to numerous resources so ask and we can try and help,
Give us the individual and dob etc etc and what you need.

Thanks guys,
The last person is Edward Skitt, I only know his name which I have found on the marriage cert of his Son Henry Skitt who married Emma Millington. The only information I have on Henry is That he was born in either 1821/1822 which I have found on the 1841 census. The parish was St Stephens in Portobello, Willenhall.

A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.

Re: The 'Skitts' from portobello
Hi Dan did you notice that bapt I found at St Peters?
St Peters
17 Jan 1825 Henry son of Edward & Mary SKITT Wolverhampton Miner Tho.Walker
I would have thought that was a strong possibility.
What was the info on the marriage cert for Henry? do you have it?
ie fathers occup?
Witnesses?
If they were born W'ton these were the churches they used.
Esp St Peters.

ps that one I found in Heath Town is yours then that is the info from a really good site here
Click on and scroll down.

Re: The 'Skitts' from portobello
I have only just ordered the marriage cert for Henry & Emma so not sure what else will be on there. I got the information from the LDS pilot search.
I don't know if the bapt is my guy, the census records would have put him at being 3/4 at the time of bapt does this right? I get the impression the norm would be to do it soon after the birth.
Regarding the 1861 census, I am using genesreunited to search and I can't find any record on there of either Skitt or Scitt, are there databases complete or have I paid for the name?
The posted info for 1861 census under Scitt tallys nicely with what I have, are simple spelling errors like that common?
Thanks everyone for your help so far.
