Thanks to all - with John's middle name and the additional info from the 1901 census, I have many leads that I can now follow.

I do have 1 question. It is stated that he was a boot maker. During this period of time would a preacher have a second source of income i.e. a Wesleyan preacher and boot maker at the same time

Lay Preachers in the non-conformists are exactly what you describe - they have other jobs and then do a course to become a laypreacher - they can then do preaching and some other things (not sure which eg Baptism yes I think but Marriage no) like full time preachers

Yes that is correct Glen, I had two Gt Gt Grandfather's who were Lay Preachers, plus a couple of Gt Uncles, they all had full time jobs, the preaching was just what they did in their spare time. Records for Lay Preachers are non existent, as they were only Part Time, and not really accountable to any Church Authority. The Methodist Society mentioned by Maths Girls does have records, but I am doubtfull there would be any for Lay Preachers. I have found looking and buying old Church Books is the best way forward, I have some for Halesowen, Cradley, Cradley Heath, Old Hill and Stourbridge. They are full of names and events, really interesting. HTH from Linell.
