From which dates can BMD certificates be ordered?

Post by Sarah_Carney »

Hello,

In a different thread somebody suggested I ordered a birth certificate for an ancestor born in 1841. I was suprised you could get certificates form that far back.

I now know that you can order certificates for birth from 1837 onwards. Does the same apply to deaths and marriages? Is that the year compulsery registration came in, and will they all contain vital information such as maiden names?

Many thanks

Sarah

Do you mean 1841 Sarah?
:?
or did you mean pre 1837?
You can't get Birth certs pre 1837 it would be a Bapt ( if they were bapt) and that would be from the
church records at the archives.

I'm confused myself. Lol.

So you can order Birth Certificates post 1837, but what about Death and Marriage Certificates?

Also, where can you find Baptism records, ar they all online, or do you have ot go to the specific Church for some of them.

Sorry, and thanks :D

post 1837 you can order birth marriage and death from gro and local registrars

pre 1837 you order bapistums from archieves marriage archieves (no father early ones just witnesses and partner)
burial register

also above could be got if the church vicar will allow you to view the register at the church if you knew it

Hi Peter,

Sorry, your first post didn't show. That timeline is really helpful. It's just what I've been looking for. Most of my research has just been done using ancestry etc, and without knowing when or why particualr records are shown because of others.

Thanks for all your help.

Post Births marriages and deaths are available, this site explains easily what will bo on each one,
http://home.clara.net/dixons/Certificates/indexbd.htm

You can order them from either the GRO
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

or local office, you can see where they are from here,

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/

Local offices use different ref numbers than GRO. So if you use say, free BMD or Ancestry the refrence will be able to use at the GRO.

You can try LDS for pre reg
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/ ... _form=true

Not all is on and cant take for granted what is there, is correct. Some are submitted records by members of the latter day saints and some extracted records.
Also Free Reg is good. not all records are on though but getting more all the time,

http://www.freereg.org.uk/

Hope this helps
Jo :)

Lol. It certainly does.

Thanks for all of those links. I have orderd lots of cetificates, but mostly form the 1900's.

I've just started using Familysearch.org properly. It's really useful!!

Familysearch.org is usefull but not always accurate.

Take note of the sources they quote on any records, especially the Ancestry File ones.

I have contacted the authors of some records to correct their mistakes on familysearch and it takes a long time for them to fix their errors.

Freereg is pretty cool and very accurate.

TheGeneologist has fully indexed the non-parochial (non conformist), overseas, marine, and military BMDs. These solve many a puzzle for me when something can;t be found in the standard BMD or church records.
