Which William?

Post by Pudsey to Howard »

Hi

In a previous post I was trying to ascertain where my nan's father [William Dimmock] was in 1881 - we didn't reach a definite conclusion - but I have bigger problems than that!

Let's recap: in the 1911 census he's a coal miner hewer, born about 1856 in Burslem [1911 census]; in the 1901 census he's a coal hewer, born about 1856 at Dudley Wood; and in the 1891 census he's a coal miner born about 1855 at Cradley.

In 1881 we know there's a William born about 1857 at Brierley Hill who is a glass blower.

Now the quandry begins:

In 1871 there's 2 possible Williams' that could be my great grandfather: William Dimmick, a chainmaker, born about 1857 at Dudley living in Rowley Regis [2 of his brothers are coal miners]; and William Dimmock, a labourer, born about 1856 in Kingswinford living in Brierley Hill.

And in 1861 one of these two is living in Dudley - he is born about 1856 in Dudley; the other, at least, is still shown as born about 1856 in Kingswinford living in Brierley Hill.

The father of both of these Williams' is also a William so clarifying things from my great grandfather's marriage certificate would not appear to be an option.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Doug
