From Black Country Bugle annual December 1977--THE OLD HILL LADY WHO MADE A LIVING POLISHING COFFINS--Sent in by her grandson Mr Lawrence Priest Darby End -Photograph of Eliza 1912 -Quote from press report dated May 11 1912--Mrs Elizabeth Priest is one of the oldest inhabitants of Old Hill.Eighty-seven years of age ,she has lived in Old Hill since her sixteenth year and for 62 years she has resided in the cottage in which she now lives at Mousesweet Brook.
Although she has lived to so great an age,Mrs Priest does not owe her longevity to luxury and easy living. When she was 10 years old, she lost her mother and the care of 8 very young children depended on her.
Again for over 50 years she worked in Old Hill as a nailmaker and can vividly remember the vicissitudes connected with the trade. One of her most painful recollections was an outbreak of cholera in the district, many years ago.
Large numbers of people died and Mr`s Priest`s memory is fixed by the fact,at the time, she secured work at polishing the numerous coffins which were required.
In her cottage,at Mousesweet Brook,Mrs Priest has reared a family of 14 children and she has now descendants numbering somewhere about a 100.
In one way Mrs Priest must hold a record .for about four years ago ,at the age of 83,she won a prize in a "Beauty Competition" at the Cradley Heath Theatre.
THE BUGLE CARRIES ON ---If Mrs Priest had around a hundred descendants in 1912,the mind boggles at the number of local folk who can trace their family tree back to this grand, old Black Country lady--and be very proud to boast such ancestry----THEY MUST BE ON BCC somewhere??
1871 Mousesweet Brook- Edward Priest 43 Chainmaker
Elizabeth Priest 42 NAILER
Thomas Priest 21Chainmaker
Joseph Priest 17Chainmaker
Ellen Priest 15Nailer
John Priest 10 Scholar
William Priest 4
Benjamen Priest 3

I remember we looked at this on the Rowley Regis forum, sure this Eliza was descended from somewhere else, i.e. not local to Rowley :?: Linell.
