I'm trying to trace the relatives of one Mary Tromans, born c1832. Mary married David Smith on 19 April 1855 and had 4 children, Joseph (1856), William (1858), Caleb (1861) and Eli (1863). I know that Mary's father was Benjamin Tromans and that he was a chainmaker and I believe he was alive when Mary married. I have Mary on the 1861 censuses onwards, and I have a copy of her marriage certificate. I am struggling to find her and her father on the 1841 and 1851 censuses however. I've checked the BCC website and can't find a match there either, and there doesn't seem to be anything on the IGI. Mary had a niece called Alice who was born c1871 and was living with her and her husband on the 1881 census. Anyone have any ideas about Mary and her relatives as I'm getting rather bogged down on this one

Can't find a John Smith as in witness

I'd already got the census entries for David Smith. The 1841 census for Benjamin Tromans is probably right as it's close to the entry for David Smith. I'm now trying, not very successfully, to work out the relative locations of Five Ways Rowley Regis, and Tibbetts/Tibbotts Gardens. Only Five Ways I know of is actually in Cradley Heath. I'm going to have to dig out the old maps, if I can remember where I filed them

Tibbetts Garden is on my map from 1901 - it appears to run parallel to High Street that is one of the roads that meet at Five Ways so certainly not very far. Apparently Tibbetts Garden changed its name to Northgate if that helps you place it.

mezentia, Cradley Heath is often listed under Rowley Regis in old records.

Yes Tibbetts Gardens was just off Graingers Lane, which was off Five Ways.

There were three Smith's listed as Original Members of Graingers Lane Methodist Chapel in 1827. Francis Smith, B Smith and J Smith. Just thought they may link to you Mezentia

I've managed to find my old 1901 maps now and located Tibbetts Gardens. I'll have to take a detour home one night to see what's left of the place.

David Smith's son William married one Hannah Bills. Those familiar with Rev Hasselgrave Thompson's "census" will know Hannah as the one whose house "serves the diabolo" I suspect, under those circumstances, they might not exactly be related to the Grainger's Lane methodists.
