Grandfather in Ireland

My grandfather, John Hamilton, said that he was born 1895 in Cork (I obtained this from his permanent Merchant Navy Record at the Public Record Office, Kew, England) and the age shown on his marriage certificate to my grandmother in 1920 at Southampton, England was 24. However, the only John Hamilton shown in the Indexes of Births in Cork at the General Register Office, Ireland around that time (searched the film at the Letter Day Saints Family History Centre) is an entry in 1897 at the District of Union Hall in the Superintendent Registrar's District of Skibbereen. The 1901 Census page of that family shows this not to be the correct John Hamilton. It is believed that his father was, as he put it in a letter to my grandmother, "..a hard headed Scotsman".

Any ideas would be welcome.

OK Nikki, thanks for that. Unfortunately still need the index for Cork to have any chance of finding him. Roll on the release of the 1901 and 1911 census transcriptions. Let's hope there aren't too many transcription errors!

Irish ancestors are notoriously difficult to research
I've been stuck on my Irish branch for a couple of years now

Fingers crossed the rest of the census is transcribed and uploaded before too long .....
It is worth checking back to those links every now and then, it is an ongoing project that does seem to get updated every so often!
