But in answer to kdw's question she seems to have summerized everything that I have read well and this find from grangers suggests someone else has come to the same conclusion which is always encouraging

This has got me story telling again:
William's dob along with his mother's marriage date suggest that it was a rather rushed wedding so
1851 Samuel Perks has married Caroline Field and is going along with the fact that he is the father - hence William Perkes
1861 Samuel and Caroline have large family to support so William goes to live with his widowed Grandmother - he is now William Field - his choice because he has argued with his step dad or grandmother's choice because she knows Samuel is not the father - we will never know!
1870 marries as William Field - ?
1871 William Peels? misspelling of Fields? "That is the Field's house"??

1901 Revertion to William Perks? I noticed that Martha is down as a Grocer Shopkeeper - had they inherited a family business from the Perks side called Perks? and chosen or it was a condition of inheritance to keep the name?

Were there any of those directories in this area around this time that might help - I can't remember their name but I think the author's name began with a P - Paget??

Once the Field name was found i checked my own records and low and behold im actually related to this lot.
Caroline Fields sister Amelia Married my GGG Grandmother Maria Mobberleys brother Thomas Mobberley.
Anyway its all added here
