Hi sjs,
I understand that sometimes the workhouses were used to house elderly people who couldn't be looked after by their family... Although, Hannah wouldn't have been all that old in 1851. Perhaps she was disabled or inclined to the bottle or some other reason why she couldn't look after her family.

I'd love to see where she was in 1851. Can anyone see her? Or find a death?

Yep, Pete. But can't see her in '51. So I was wondering if there was an earlier death ... Although I do think the Workhouse one is the right one.

Don't forget they were old at 50 Di :!: Poor Hannah may have been unwell, not surprising with the hard lives they had. I think she is the daughter of Wm and Sarah too, born in Sedgley and baptised at Dudley, that all seems to fit, good luck with the Smith hunt Sherry, best wishes from linell.

Hi Linell, Di and peterd,
Thanks for all the great suggestions. Fifty would be old for the hard lives they lived, but as Di suggested, if Hannah was in the Workhouse, wouldn't she still show up on the 1851, 1861 and 1871 census records at the Workhouse??? Are there records for the Dudley Union Workhouse that might show when she arrived there and/or the condition of her health, etc...

As far as Edward age 4 goes, Di, I'm not sure if he is a brother, or son of the daughter, Hannah, who was listed as head of household in 1851. sjs

Peterd, thanks for the list of Smith entries on the I.G.I. (via pm).

As you mentioned, it appears to be two different families, one with the father recorded as William and the other with the father recorded as Willm - and both married to a Sarah. As if the name Smith wasn't hard enough... I did find a marriage for a Sarah Boot and a William Smith on 23 Dec 1786 at St. Thomas, Dudley (see IGI Batch M040144) which looks like a pretty good fit, but again...how do you prove it is the right one???

"possible" children of William and Sarah (Boot?) SMITH listed on I.G.I. Batch C040141:
William Smith c 28 Sep 1788 St Thomas, Dudley
Nancy SMITH c 13 Mar 1791 St Thomas, Dudley
Samuel SMITH c 25 Dec 1792 St Thomas, Dudley
Lucy SMITH c 10 Mar 1793 St Thomas, Dudley
Sarah SMITH c 14 Jun 1795 St Thomas, Dudley
Mary SMITH c 27 Mar 1796 St Thomas, Dudley

more "possible" children of William and Sarah (Boot?) SMITH listed on I.G.I. Batch C040142:
Maria SMITH c 29 Oct 1797 St Thomas, Dudley
Hannah SMITH c 25 Dec 1798 St Thomas, Dudley *possible wife of Benjamin Mansell, Sr.
Joseph SMITH c 13 Apr 1800 St Thomas, Dudley
Jane SMITH c 4 May 1800 St Thomas, Dudley
Samuel SMITH c 25 Dec 1801 St Thomas, Dudley
Jesse SMITH c 11 Jul 1802 St Thomas, Dudley
Maria SMITH c 10 Apr 1803 St Thomas, Dudley
Sarah SMITH c 29 Apr 1804 St Thomas, Dudley
Mary SMITH c 14 Oct 1804 St Thomas, Dudley

"possible" children for Willm. and Sarah SMITH listed on I.G.I. Batch C040142:
Benjamin SMITH c 31 Jul 1803 St Thomas, Dudley
Priscilla SMITH c 7 Jul 1805 St Thomas, Dudley
James SMITH c 4 Jan 1807 St Thomas, Dudley
Betsey SMITH c 27 Mar 1808 St Thomas, Dudley
John SMITH c 12 Mar 1809 St Thomas, Dudley
Willm SMITH c 7 Jan 1810 St Thomas, Dudley
Mary SMITH c 21 Jul 1811 St Thomas, Dudley
Willm SMITH c 21 Jul 1811 St Thomas, Dudley
Eliza SMITH c 22 Sep 1811 St Thomas, Dudley
Mary Ann SMITH c 27 Dec 1812 St Thomas, Dudley

and IGI Batch C040143 also lists these "possible" children for Willm and Sarah SMITH:
Josh SMITH c 24 Dec 1815 St Thomas, Dudley
Hanh Maria Gill Smith c 4 Aug 1816, St Thomas, Dudley
Willm SMITH c 16 Feb 1817 St Thomas, Dudley
Sarah SMITH c 2 Aug 1818 St Thomas, Dudley
Josh SMITH b 17 Jul 1819, c 8 Aug 1819 St Thomas, Dudley
Willm SMITH c 15 Oct 1820 St Thomas, Dudley
Mary SMITH c 25 Dec 1821 St Thomas, Dudley
John Robert SMITH c 25 Dec 1822 St Thomas, Dudley
James SMITH c 26 Jan 1823 St Thomas, Dudley
Caroline SMITH b 9 Feb 1824, c 20 Jun 1824 St Thomas, Dudley

Can anyone claim either of these families? And is anyone researching Sarah Boot, who was christened 25 Dec 1766 at St. Thomas, Dudley, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Boot. It looks like she "could" be the Sarah who married William Smith 23 Dec 1786 at St. Thomas, Dudley (see IGI Batch M040144), but further research is needed to prove that. Any ideas on who the other Sarah, wife of Willm, would be???

these are all the possibility on igi for worcestershire marriage for each group i could find extracted and submitted hopefully people can possibly rule some of them out to narrow down the field, but you cannot discount marriage in staffordshire that will be another list, i dont like generating list like this but it the only way i can see around your problem hope fully people can rule them out via census etc
