Re: John Crawford born abt 1822
Ferdinano Shakespeare was b 1845, and was John Crawford's son-in-law, being married to his daughter Martha (Crawford) b 1846. As you can see from the census entries he did not seem fond of his magnificent baptismal name, and used several variations of it, including 'Ferden Andrew' and even 'Andrew' - perhaps he associated the name with that of great-uncle, also named Ferdinando Shakespeare (b 1814) who was transported to Australia for theft! There was one other Ferdinando Shakespeare, b 1760 - quite a number of people on this forum descend from him.
John Crawford & Martha Boden were married 1839, Oldswinford - don't know why, as they were both born in Dudley. John Crawford was born 1822, son of James Crawford & Mary Turner (m 1815 St Thomas, Dudley) - James is one of my 'brickwalls' : don't know where he came from. Likewise, Mary Turner - she was probably from Dudley, but too many of this name to sort them out.
I have traced quite a number of the families descendants - they are on bcc here:
http://bcconnections.tribalpages.com/tribe/browse?userid=bcconnections&view=0&pid=34897&rand=283986552
The Crawford family were Fender Manufacturers in Dudley, and as mentioned in another thread, there still exists a large family grave in Dudley Borough Cemetery - have the incsriptions somewhere: must check the cemetery website to see if there are any other details! The grave is well maintained and I have seen flowers on it, so there are presumably some living relatives that I have never found. I presume John was buried in the Queens Cross Cemetery, as the new cemetery dates from about 20 years after he died. There are, of course, no stones in the old cemetery (actually, I tell a lie - there was one big one if it is still there, and there were some stones stacked against the wall at the bottom - perhaps it could be a project for forum members to record them if they are still there: there weren't many, and I don't think anyone has ever looked at them.
In the 1881 census entries the James Shakespeare aged 1 is my great grandfather - his brother John Thomas Crawford Shakespeare aged 5 was the father of Percy Shakespeare the well known Dudley artist.
The 1871 census entry is probably mistranscribed - here we have 'Andrew' Shakespeare (this was Ferdinando using is Andrew synonym) but the wifes name is wrong - this was Martha (nee Crawford) and not Matilda.
And.........wow, how did you find all those census entries so quickly??

Paul Vickers b 1 May 1847, bapt 10 Oct 1847, St Thomas, Dudley, s of James Vickers & Mary.
James & Mary Vickers also seem to have had (IGI):

Just noticed Hannah Parkes in that 1861 census entry - where was her husband?
Steve
James was at home with his parents. Whats odd is the submitted entry for the marriage is 7th April, the census was done for the 7th April so that would have been their wedding night!

I was just looking for James Crawford that you have as married to Sarah unknown. Theres a possibility he was married twice? First to Sarah Ann Lewis, Sep, 1880 and then to Alice Clayton Dec 1887 Stourbridge.
