Re: Garratt Line
Think that for Deborah Hannah it was birth 1747 and christening 18 Feb 1749. Possible, but hard to confirm birth date. Should maybe only be as estimate?

Re: Garratt Line
Hi folks,
Was interested to see the name Sheldon Garratt appear. Does anyone know if the names Sheldon, Shildon and Shelah are interchangeable?
I have the birth cert for Samuel Garratt born 1842 (it is a typed one fron Sandwell) his fathers name is down as Shildon Garratt and mother is Hannah Garratt formerley Lees, but on Samuels marriage cert (scanned copy from Dudley) his fathers name is down as Shelah. All the census info I have has his father as Shelah too. Is it possible that Sandwell have made a mistake in the transcribing? Does anyone know how it is done? Would they check for me if I phoned them up?
Any advice gratefully received

Re: Garratt Line
Could just be how it was heard when they were writing down the name
with accents it ends up being anything!
I like to think that perhaps the vicars knew the family a little and so would know the person/name and the typical spelling.
But I suppose not all did.
Did you find a bapt for Shelagh?
I would think that is the name

Hi cid,
It seems that the name Shelah was written in many versions. I have seen Shelah, Shelagh, Shilo, Sela, Shelly all for the same person.

Think her name is also written as 'Parthena', she is the daughter of Julius Garratt ~1761 and Sarah (Sally) Higgins, and married William Addleton 30 Oct 1820 Kingswinford.

Re: Garratt Line
Hi Di,
Yes it is the marriage of Samuel Garratt and Maria Summers. I also have Samuels Birth Cert, but it has a different date to the one on the IGI. So think I'm going to go to archives to check that one out.
While we're on Garratts. Was Shelah married before? Was his and Hannahs eldest son born before they got married? He is down as John Lees Garratt on BCC born in 1830. (Shelah and Hannah married in 1831) He was baptized the same day as Samuel in 1844. Which makes him 14 when he was baptized. I know that this is not unusual but a lot of his other siblings were baptized before him, could it be that he was illegitimate and for some reason was baptized much later that his siblings?
And is Hannah Lees related to Shelah's mother Mary Lee?
I know that there has been a lot of research done by others on this family and I'm fascinated. Was it all done via Parish records?
Regards
Cid

Re: Garratt Line
Hi Cid,
The 1830 date for the birth of John Lees Garratt was from an extracted IGI entry:
JOHN LEES GARRETT
Birth: 05 DEC 1830
Christening: 25 MAR 1844 Saint Thomas, Dudley, Worcester, England
Father: SHELAH GARRETT
Mother: HANNAH
Samuel's was from the same place. It will be interesting to see what you find in the archives.

Re: Garratt Line
Hi NL
Took a copy of Marriage cert of Sheal Garratt and Hannah Lees. He is down as batchelor and she as spinster so neither of them married before. Both of this parish, no consent needed so must have been full age. Neither signed. Witnesses were Tho's Alles (registrar) and Thomas Lees x. Couldn't find baptisms I was looking for but think that was down to not being able to read my own writing
Will go back and have another look to see if I can throw any light onto why they got married after their eldest was born.
Cheers
