Birth Certificate for an adopted person
Hi guys,
I was showing the work that I've done on my family tree to a friend at work and she was interested in what information I had got and how I did the research, so I showed her the info on ancestry.co.uk.
She wants to trace her family back, but as she is adopted we are unsure if there are any issues attached to getting a copy of the original birth certificate (not the adoption certificate) as I am sure I've read somewhere that you have to attend an interview if you were adopted before a certain date.
If there are any problems with her getting her own birth certificate, would it be easier for someone else to get a copy?
Thanks in advance
Chris

Re: Birth Certificate for an adopted person
Thanks for the reply Northern Lass.
The link you posted seems to refer to the adoption certificate rather than the original birth certificate, pre adoption. I should have said in the previous post that she has the adoption certificate.
Sorry for the confusion
Chris
EDIT - forgot to say that we have found the details of the original birth registration (in the pre-adoption name) - would this make a difference as to ordering the certificate? I wasn't sure if the record would have some sort of flag on it to block it being ordered.

I read it that they refer to the original birth cert via that link
"that only the adoptee can apply for his or her original birth records, so if your interested in learning about family history, it may not be possible to trace your genetic family line"
so might be worth contacting that dept armed with what the person has already and request their orig birth cert

Re: Birth Certificate for an adopted person
chris i know she will be allowed her full original birth cert as there was a case recent where a women took the catholic church to court as they refused to release the adoption details and she won, here father was a GI during the war cannot remember where i saw it.
A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.

Re: Birth Certificate for an adopted person
She's gone ahead and ordered it online from the GRO website. Time will tell if they issue it or not, but she quoted the references from the birth record on Ancestry.
She's not interested in finding the birth parents, more just curious about who they were and if they had any other family.

Re: Birth Certificate for an adopted person
She should have no problem getting a copy of her original birth certificate. But if she wants to see her adoption records, depending on when she was adopted, she will have to go through a social worker. It may take a few weeks, but she is entitled to see them is she wants to.

Re: Birth Certificate for an adopted person
Just a quick update - the birth certificate has been received and has filled in a few blanks. Marriage certificate and fathers birth certificate have now been ordered so some progress should be made in the coming weeks.
Thanks again for all the replies

Re: Birth Certificate for an adopted person
Can't see a problem with archiving this one as the original question has been sorted now.
I was going to keep updates in the one thread, but can always start another thread as and when progress is made.
