Street names

Post by Silver surfer »

Does anyone know if there is any info anywhere on the naming of Streets particularly in the Dudley area. Obviously some were named after locations, brook, spring, park etc and some were named after influential people. Just wondered where the name of Martin Hill Street in Dudley originated. I found a will fairly recently of my 4xgt gd mother's brother, Thomas Martin. He owned vast amounts of land, mines, a pool and 'the great hill' as well as scores of properties along the High St and many in Cradley Heath, later to become Tibbetts Garden. Wm Tibbetts was one of his many gt nephews and it was one of his properties that became the gathering place for the new Methodists in CH. I believe Thomas acquired his wealth from his late sister Sarah Lay. If anyone wants to read the will go to

http://www.blackcountryhistory.org.uk/default.aspx and search for "thomas martin" and look at the Dudley results. All the 9 results pertain to the family.
If anyone likes to solve puzzles or is deep thinking, have a look and see what you make of it.

My belief is that Thomas was leased some property between 1790 -1820 by Henry Shaw surgeon of Stourbridge and Edward Bridgewater. Were they related I wonder? Thomas's sister Sarah married ? Lay (can't find this) and then Joseph Bridgewater. Back to my first question of naming of streets. Was Martin Hill street named after Thomas? There was also a rellie named John Fisher who lived round the Dudley Port area. Thomas's daughter Maria married him at St Giles 6 Nov 1849. Was Fisher St named after him? Saw somewhere that it was first called Fisher Lane so probably not.

Oh well, gonna make a connection if it kills me.

Not sure on street names in Dudley I have the Street Names of Stourbridge and its Vicinity vol 2
nothing in there ...

I had a look last time I went and there doesnt seem to be a book that they have but I can ask again.
But they do have an index system so the name might be filed under there and info.
If you add it to the look ups I will try and have a look

This is that Thomas Martin on connections...make that connection SS cos he is mine too!! (sort of)
The will is on here

Rollason Road Blackheath, Dudley was named after A.A.Rollason

The Old Non-Parochial Registers of Dudley (1899) were published by Arthur Rollason in his attempt to make sure that their contents were not lost. He was a member of the Harleian Society and also the British Record Society, and lived in Dixon`s Green in Dudley.

It seems a pity to archive this when the family hastened been added to BCC.

Or is it better to break it off to a new post?
