*Arc tbc* ---BCC Oldbury Murphys in Ireland

Post by MarkCDodd »

Wasting a lot of money on this pathetic Rip Off site....

http://ifhf.brsgenealogy.com/quis.php

They deliberately restrict what you can search on so you waste money looking at useless records.

i.e For Baptisms you can't include the mother's names in your search, only the fathers.

So I was gettting plenty of hits with Patrick as the father but a hugh variance in the forname of the mother.

Anyway.....

We have been trying to figure out the maiden name of the matriarch of the family, Catherine Murphy.

We had established she came from Ruthdrum in County Wicklow after deciphering a badly transcribed census entry.

This record looks like a good clue and suggests her name to be Fitzgerald...

Name: Thomas Murphy

Date of Baptism/Birth: 12/12/1856

Address: Workhouse

County: Wicklow

Parish: Rathdrum

Denomination: Roman Catholic

Father: Patrick Murphy

Mother: Catherine Fitzgerald

Sponsor 1: Michael Farrel

Sponsor 2: Catherine Kavanagh

This record is not as good (due to the parish...) but offers another possibility

Name: Michael Murphy

Date of Baptism/Birth: 04/05/1853

Address: Slievman

County: Wicklow

Parish: Glendalough

Denomination: Roman Catholic

Father: Patrick Murphy

Mother: Catherine Mitten

Sponsor 1: Hugh Murphy

Sponsor 2: Winifred Mitten

To aid with my research, can anybody recommend a better site or method to do parish record searches in Ireland?

A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.

I knew the NLI had all the Roman Catholish parish records but I am hoping to find an online site that has better search capabilites than the one I was using.

I might have to bite the bullet and hire a researcher.

It is amazing that so many people worldwide end up with a brick wall once they trace their ancestors to Ireland.

I would have thought the most odvious thing to index would be the Parish Records yet little seems to have been done in that regard.

I'm having the same problem Mark, with my hubby's ancestors.
We did go for a long weekend to Dublin (a few years ago) and found some info in the Dublin City Library and Archive's. They were really helpful but if I go again I'll make sure I go armed with more info

Very many thanks for that information, Mark. Yes, I agree with what's been said, it's not easy at present to trace Irish ancestors, especially when the surname is one that occurs as frequently as Murphy does. I have the same problem with my great grandfather Dennis McCormick from what was Queen's County, plus all the spelling variations.
