****COMPLETED****Death certificate Two names one man

Post by Paul-E »

Hi,

As I started researching my family a while ago I have decided to go through all the info I have and be more thorough and make sure everything is correct.

To confirm dates of his death I have obtained a copy of my GGrandads death certificate.

In the name list on the death certificate My GGrandad has two surnames listed

Name and Surname: James Bloomer GREEN otherwise James Bloomer TEALL
Died: 18 December 1952
Registration District: Newport (south wales)

I decided to re-check with family and after talking to my uncle who remembers James as an old man. Word was he deserted WWI and changed his name to GREEN and moved from Birmingham to Newport (gwent) to avoid authorities.

There was talk he also married again after his wife Ethel died 11 May 1935. I checked this and have found that in Newport on 3 Feb 1936 a James Bloomer TEALL married a Miss Kate Amelia Jordan at the REGISTER OFFICE NEWPORT MON. I have yet to confirm that this is the same James as My GGrandad and am working on it.
It is interesting that Kate was born in Birmingham Warwickshire 3 November 1889......the plot thickens...an old flame maybe?

Really my question would be why the two names on the death certificate? Surely if the rumours are to be believed and he deserted WWI he would never mention his real surname would he? And why is it all the documents I have found he is always listed as Teall never Green when I do a search for both?

Any opinions as to what he might be up to would be helpful.

Thanks
Paul

I suppose it was who ever registered the birth who gave both names. Probably they just wanted to do it right.
Do you think he just used his Green name for work? When did National Insurance numbers come in? I've never understood how people could juts change names and carry on - at least in WWII he must have had documentation, was that all as Teall as well?
Odd isn't it?

I have researched JB and Kate and they did marry. He used name TEAL. They married 3 Feb 1936 in Newport Mon.

Either he changed name after this which rules out WWI deserter theory. Or he was using two surnames?

I'm at a loss on this.

I cannot see why two surnames are on a death certificate that refer to one man?

Birth registered as James Bloomer Teal. No mention of Green.
1891 is last census he seems to fill out.

Perhaps it was just one of those "mates" names? As in teal-green the colour? So at some point he got a nick-name and it stuck so well that half the people thought it was his real name?
My father got a new first name his first day down the pit because the foreman refused to have a lad with such a naff name! It stuck to the point that 60 years on a plaque on a scottish museum was unveiled with ...yes! My father's name totally wrong! Oh well, I don't think he liked the real one much himself :-)

I've been told that marriage certificates should be in the name "by which you are known" - perhaps death certificates are the same?

Interestingly Wikipedia has teal a blue colour but we always said teal-green at home and I never heard teal-blue :?

Who gave the information for the death certificate?
The information is only as good as the informant knows!
Good thoughts Gardener!
