Much more fascinating than anything shown on tv these days. Problem is by the time we put the little one to bed I start research around 8'ish and before I know it, it is 1am. They say time flies when your enjoying yourself! Helen wants me to trace her family now as well.......she will have to wait, it is confusing enough trying to fathom my own family out

Ancestry suffers from "Copy the bad data" syndrome.

People get informed there is a match and then absorb the data into their tree ithout bothering to check.

But, if you are carefull, the amount of usefull data you can get from others research is huge.

Their newest addition that tells you when somebody has edited a person in their tree thatmatches somebody in your tree is brilliant!

Their transcriptions are pathetic! Their search engine has no real soundex ability.

So...I also use "The Genealogist" run by S&N.

It has the most accurate transcriptions. The best search engine. (Their beta family forename search is fantastic).

They are adding new databases all the time and eventaully, due to their excellent range of Parish records, will have the best church records.

Mmm, sounds good Mark but do you know their policy on sharing? Ancestry seem to be fairly relaxed and encourage you to send images to others but not so sure about them. There was quite a run-in with them about copyright on another genealogy-board a few years ago I think. As far as I recall the only cd I ever had from them was sealed and breaking the seal = agreeing to strict terms of usage which made me very nervous - mindyou I always wait for the green man before I cross the road

They don't really care about the images. Most of the books they use are available for free elsewhere. S&N adds some very clever search engines to the book and that is what you pay for when you buy an S&N product or use The Genealogist.

They did spend a lot more money on their scanning of census etc than Ancestry did.

If you compare their scans next to the Ancestry ones you can almost forgive the Ancestry transcribers their mistakes.

Their new Non Conformist BMD is fantastic. You can search the non-conformist records the same as you can the normals BDM.

I just wish they would hurry up with the Shropshire/Staffordshire registers.
