*Arc tbc* -Benjamin Brettell 1778 - 1845 uncompleted archive

Post by dumblonde »

New info re: Benjamin - BCC needs tweaking!
I have just found his will - proved 4/4/1845. He was a tailor of Islington, Halesowen.
Beneficiaries are:

Susannah - his wife
Mary Ann Barnet or poss Barret (indistinct) wife of Samuel - his daughter
Eliza Brettell -daughter married at time of proof wife of Henry (Fernie) indistinct
Matilda Brettell - daughter married at the time of proof wife of Matthew Granger ( m 'Mar' 1842)
Ann - daughter wife of Charles Mason (m 16/1/1834 Halesowen)
and other daughters
no mention of any sons
So......if you look at the archived entries it is now obvious that there are two Benjamins, because this one could not have married Nancy Hardeman, even though her Benjamin was a widower and possibly older than her.
Could someone look up 1841 census and find out where Benjamin and Susannah were? They had property in Islington and High Street Halesowen.

As to Benjamin and Nancy:
I think that their son Josiah b1838 m Myriam Lawe at St Thomas Dudley 2/11/1863 and that their children were:
Maria
Jesse m Jane Unknown ( monumental inscription on black obelisk St Lukes Cradley Heath Jesse d 29/8/1938 aged 78 & Jane d 5/10/1843)
Josiah
David m Elsie Brettle
Myra
Levi
Can anyone check this out on censuses?

Hi Peter and Northernlass
I agree the Benjamin on BCC who married Nancy is ok apart from the bit about poss married to Susannah. We now need to check census for the other Benj and Susannah in Halesowen, agreed?

I just posted a reply to this and can't see it - got some message about it going to DRAFTS...??

Anyway, I edplained that I am conducting a one name study on BRETTELL and variants.
I have a website at www.brettell.info (click on BRETTELL in left hand menu)
the will you found refers to the union of Benjamin Brettell and Susannah GRANGER - details of this family have previously been posted by others.

I can't find the earliest posts for this topic??

Hi Mary welcome to the forum.

Put your link on the useful links and put a post in general discussion mentioning your study

plus add your info to surnames
that way we cover all the bases.
any earlier discussion is probably in the black country archives if you do a search on benjamin brettle or brettell but we have so
many posts might not be easy to find straight away.

Can we just check the following as if we feel it is good it needs entering...and connections made

info from a source

If the Benjamin who married Susannah Granger was the son of Benjamin Brettell & Nancy Partridge
and christened in Bromsgrove 1776 -making him the grandson of Thomas Brettell & Mary Chance).
then he needs adding with mother and father here...
http://bcconnections.tribalpages.com/tr ... =750002156

This is the Benjamin Brettell, tailor of Islington Halesowen with the 1845 will
death 27/3/1845 (Stourbridge Mar qtr 1845 18/404)
age at death given (67) in PR (NBI) is two years out.

Benjamin Brettell who married Nancy Hardemann in 1818 was the son of John Brettell and Joan Chambers (a widow when she married John)
christened 10/3/1782.
This Benjamin was a widow when he married Nancy Hardemann.
Prob the Benjamin who died Dec qtr 1839 (Dudley 18/201).

So do we think this checks out?
looks good to me and from a very good source!

If so someone needs to add this to BCC
along with the Benj and suz grainger info re marriage

if you can do it DB great if you don't have the time if we can see what we think and then we can enter it
I have a load of look ups to get thru so if not added I will try at some stage
shame to waste this
