ONIONS,BROWN, TIFT+WALKER (Norma Tree)

Hello everyone,
I am a 74 year old woman living in Michigan USA. I was born near and raised in Upper Landywood which is between Walsall and Cannock. My mother's family is from Walsall and I am looking for information on them. My grandmother was Fanny Elizabeth ONIONS, nee BROWN. She married Thomas ONIONS somewhere between 1885 and 1895. I am interested in finding my grandfather's family and also my grandmother's. She was Fanny Elizabeth BROWN and her parents were Rosannah TIFT and William BROWN. William may have been from Shropshire but was living in Walsall. Rosannah was from Walsall. She has a sister who married a man named WALKER. They owned a pub called The Chainmaker's Arms. I believe the Onions family was living in either Blue Lane or Green Lane in Walsall. My grandparents eventually lived in Croft St, close to the school and my grandfather rang the bell at St. Peter's church on Stafford St. I was told that my grandfather may have come from the Pleck but I am not sure of this. If anyone has any knowledge of any of these people, I would appreciate hearing what they know. Norma Barta.

I have no marriage certificates . . . yet. Right now I am amazed (and also swamped!) with all the information you have found. It appears that many of the names do fit with what I have been told, specifically the ONIONS names but the others sound like probabilities rather than possibilities.
"Yep here they are :
1901 16 Lewis Street
John Walker 25 Currier (Leather) Rushall
Henrietta Walker 23 WAlsall
May Walker 2 Walsall
Janet Walker 1 Walsall"
I wonder about this since I know they owned a pub in the 1930s and 1940s. I suppose that could have come about later in their lives.

"Marriages Dec 1854

Allen Mary Ann Walsall 6b 873
Brown William Walsall 6b 873 "
The dates would seem to fit but I have no knowledge of these people as far as being related or not.
I need to explain that I am new to all this and a bit lost at present. My information came mainly from an aunt who worked for Henrietta Walker (her aunt) at the pub when needed. I am trying to put a family tree together for my children and grandchildren which is why I joined. Do you know of a similar genealogy site for the Cannock (Staffs) area? My father's side is from that area, Cheslyn Hay, to be precise.NBarta

Sightly off topic but...

I have some Onions from Wellington in Shropshire who emigrated to Chicago in the USA in about 1910.

Whilst in the USA they changed their name to Anians.

Any idea why that would be?

My interest is that they are all decendants of Mary Dodd and therfore of my GGG Grandfather, Thomas Dodd.

Might be a name change to disassociate from the name Onions as in veg
or in an american accent it would come out as an A sound so written as they heard them say it
Maybe?

will split this if it vears off

Thank you peterd I noticed that one too - I'll see what I can do - are there likely to be many churches in Walsall at that time do you know and any idea which is most likely?

not got a clue maybe people at archive might help you to narrow it down ?

but which ever one you find first it might be a case of daughter marring where parents did so the church would be open before 1854 and after 1872

I have been to Walsall Record Office on behalf of Norma.
I found 3 out of 4 marriages that we were specifically looking for and 1 that was a find so here goes:

18 April 1895 at St Andrew's Church, Walsall
Thomas Onions, 25, Bac, Bricklayer, 72 Burrowes St, (father) Elijah Onions, Miner
Fanny Elizabeth Brown, 21, Spin, 44 Birchills, (father) William Brown, Boatman
Witnesses: Joseph Cartwright, Charlotte Wilks

14 October 1872 at St John's Church, Pleck, Walsall
William Brown, 19, Bac, Labourer, Green Lane (father) Frederick Brown, Labourer.
Rosannah Tiff,17,Spin, Pleck, (father) Joseph Stiff, Labourer
Witnesses: James Hodsonx, Martha Hodsonx

25 December 1854 at St Peter's, Walsall
William Beard Brown, F, Bac, Curty?, Plefton? St, (father) William Brown, Hannah?
Margaret Allen, F, Spin, Green Lane, (father) Richard? Allen, Carter
Witnesses:??? Allen, ??? Allen
(The writing on this one was appalling but I did my best - italics are a best shot!)

I couldn't find the marriage in 1871 of William Beard Brown and Ann Allen that someone on the forum found -

My extra unless you have it is Thomas's younger brother
1 June 1895 at St Andrew's, Walsall
Robert Onions, 21, B, Iron Worker, 72 Burrowes St, (father) Elijah Onions, Miner
Jane Elizabeth Hillback, 22, S, 70 Burrowes St, (father) Samuel Hillback, Chain maker
Witnesses: John Gildow, Martha Hodson.
