Has anyone seen or know of any documentary evidence relating to the marriage of John Dowen (b. ~1786) and Mary Sivorn (b. ~1788) in 1807. I believe both of them lived in Darlaston and were possibly born there. I've seen numerous references to this union in other trees but no-one seems to have quoted a source.

Re: Dowen/Sivorn
Thanks for that Peter. I suppose my real concern is that the IGI is still a secondary source as in ...
"Although it is not an original source, the International Genealogical Index (IGI) is an invaluable key to finding relevant original information." (ref - http://www.ancestor-search.info/SRC-IGI.htm)
However, as I now know that St Lawrence's is implicated in this I suppose that I will have to arrange for a trip to Stafford to see the original registers ... unless there is an easier way that is (Is there??). I have had so many false starts that I tend not to trust information unless I have seen it for myself.
I realise that other people's trees are tertiary sources but there seem's to be some debate over whether the name is Sivorn or Sevorn - someone must have made an error once that has been replicated in numerous places.
Alan
p.s. The Thomas Dowen you mention is my g.g.grandfather

The registers should be at Stafford
I can't see them on my list for W'ton which is on a pdf on their web site if you scroll down here
"Our Guide to Church of England Parish Registers (PDF file) has details of all our holdings"
http://www.wolverhamptonarchives.dial.p ... isters.htm
I thought they had them might be worth a phonecall just to dble check
Staff have these accord to their info
DARLASTON, St Lawrence
Ancient parish
Pr's at SRO
Bap 1539-1971
Mar 1539-1987
Bur 1539-1925
Bt's at LRO
Bap 1660-1844
Mar 1660-1835
Bur 1660-1844
Note: bap/bur
missing 1836-1842
This is a useful link for any Wolverhampton ones too
http://www.wolverhamptonhistory.org.uk/ ... ilyhistory
I look up a lot of records and the name changes depending who is entering it
most of the people couldnt write their name so the name changed to probably what the vicar heard
and with an accent that could change on a bapt and marriage etc etc
So expect lots of variations

Re: Dowen/Sivorn
alan altough it was taken from igi it was an extracted data from the parish register and not submitted by anyone so usually these are correct,

I'm used to that both in history and in real lifehowever in this case I suspect that people are either using the original, the IGI reference or simply copying off each other. My concern would be that the original is different to the IGI entry ... or perhaps the original is simply illegible and you have to make up your own mind!
I think that people do just copy of others and that is fatal in my view
where possible the records need to be checked
that is why I like us all on BCC where ever possible to check the actual registers, certifs etc
although I realise it is not always possible
and sometimes it isnt necessary especially when you get some really good clues from other sources that verify your info.
I have to say I have recently looked up a few things and even though it was an extracted record it was incorrect
however in their defence it was hard to read and took a magnifying glass ane me goggles on!
Mind you even when you look up the info on the cert some of that is as good as a fairy story with made up fathers
and other fabrications

Hi Alan
do you need any more on this one?
Let us know if you get the info from Staffs
might be worth just emailing them and asking how much for them to copy the page and send to you
So will now flag to archive this pending more info on PR
it can easily be brought back to the main board via a pm to a mod

Re: *Arc pend more info* -Dowen/Sivorn
I think that I probably have got sufficient for now ... I must spend more time trawling the IGI pending a visit to Stafford because I am pretty sure that the St Lawrence registers are there. Thanks to both of you for your input.
