*Arc pend look up/cert info tbc* Harriet Bailey (or Smith??)

Post by BlueSavannah »

Good Morning All

Hope it is ok to add my other brickwall to the forum

My great x 3 grandma is Harriet Bailey who married Amos Mason in 1869 at Etruria, Stoke. She names her father as Benjamin Bailey, Collier.

Harriet is born 1849c in Oldbury according to all census I have her on from 1871 to 1911.

I have so far been unable to trace her on the 51 and 61 census or a birth registration which would be in the right area. I HAVE found though on the 51 census in Oldbury a Harriet Smith aged 2 with parents Benjamin Bailey and Eliza Bailey. All the children listed have the surname Smith, except for a new baby which is down as N.K. Benjamin was listed as a Coal Miner which fits occupation on Harriet's marriage. (Class: HO107; Piece: 2024; Folio: 478; Page: 42; GSU roll: 87430).

I have found a married of an Eliza Smith to Bejamin Bailey in the June Quarter of 1849 in the district of West Bromwich which appears to cover Oldbury. There is also a birth registration in the June Quarter of 1849 of a Harriet Smith in the West Brom district.

Have I missed an obvious entry of a Harriet Bailey somewhere with a father Benjamin or does the the above sound like my lady?

Kind Regards
Claire

Claire moving this to Black country for the mo
if it becomes a brick wall will move it back

but this marriage is here

1849
BAILEY Benjamin SMITH Eliza West Bromwich, Christ Church Sandwell Register Office 23/2/199

I think with what you have..
" have found a marriage of an Eliza Smith to Bejamin Bailey in the June Quarter of 1849 in the district of West Bromwich .....
There is also a birth registration in the June Quarter of 1849 of a Harriet Smith in the West Brom district."

that answers it
she was regis as a Smith

that marriage would be good to check the occup of father and ages if they are on and fathers etc

Good Morning NL

Thanks for the input on this. I am pretty confident that I have the found the answer to my missing Harriet but I didnt want to presume anything with nothing else to suggest this was my Harriet.

I think I will order that marriage cert for Benjamin and Eliza.

Is Oldbury a part of West Bromwich or a village/town nearby?

Many thanks
Claire

I can look that up for you as it will be at Sandwell/Smethwick archives but I went the other day so it will be bout 3 wks before I go again
so up to you if you need it earlier.

Oldbury is now in Sandwell
if you have a look in our History Section I have put a breakdown courtesy of CHAS ( the Smethwick archives) about the areas in Sandwell.

It used to be under Worcs
It is near West Brom and Smethwick

NL, thanks for that info re Oldbury. I will have a read up as advised.

Not to worry about the look up, offer much appreciated. I may order the certificate at the end of the week as its looking likely to be the right couple, just doesnt answer who Harriet's real father might be :?

Many thanks again

might be worth getting that birth cert then just to check father on there- say you only want it if mother is Eliza or similar ie Elizabeth
dont stipulate a fathers name
if no father then may well not be Benjamin

Think you are right NL. I have a feeling she is illegitimate and believed her father was Benjamin as he married mother in same quarter of her birth so she would have only known him.

Will check bank funds at end of week and convince OH to let me buy them both

Hi NL

I have ordered the marriage cert for Benjamin & Eliza and also the birth cert for Harriet Smith which are in the same quarter of 1849. Hopefully they will come by the end of next week so can check if this is my great x 3 grandma.
