Thanks for that, I think the above are likely to be my grandfater and grandmother. He died aged 49 years, she lived on but died many years back. There was a story told to me when I was a child that my grandmother (Smith) was related to the Cussons soap people, I've always wondered if that's where the few brain cells came from as the Guinne side didn't seem too bright, they were however very fertile!

The birth in Prescot runf a bell, I seem to recall coming across a situation whereby at a point in time someone was in workhouse in Whiston/Prescot. Could it be that the mother might have been in such a place temporarily? Why would she be in a workhouse 30 miles west of the family living in Salford?

Re: Which is the best value on-line database search site
Thanks for everybodies help, I much appreciate it, there's a lot of stuff here to read through and collate.
I think when I was on this 20 years back I formed the view that to get some information about Hugh Guinne (father of Joseph Guinne b.1843) I would have to physically go to Bolton Registry office, is that correct? (The reason I didn't do it 20 years back is because I was living Hong Kong and like I said, was much irritated by the surname keep changing).
What was the literacy rate in 1840?
