*Archive TBC* BMD- Marsden family query

Post by pkay »

I'm brand new on the forum, live in Australia and would like to trace any ancestors on my grand fathers side :-)
All I have available is the following information

Surname :MARSDEN
First name: Edward
Second Name: William

Occupation: Thames Lighterman (Journeyman)

Wife's Name: Marsden (formerly Rodrick)
First Name:Eliza
Second Name: Mary

I do have a certified copy of a birth entry of one of their children which I can scan and email to any forum member who would be kind enough to help. The birth registration district is Poplar and Bethnal Green in London, the birth was registered in July 1907

Any help greatly appreciated

1901
16 Cording Street, Bromley, London
Edward W Marsden 32 - Lighterman Barge - b Stepmay?
Eliza W Marsden 28 - b Hackney
Florence E Marsden 4 - b Bromley
Edward J Marsden 3 - b Bromley
Harold E Marsden 8 months - b Bromley

this information seems to be the family I am searching for, as the names of the two parents are correct and i have confirmed details from another source that Edward John Marsden was one of their children who was born in 1898 (sadly was killed in France in 1918 in WW1)

was the info above for these 5 people taken from a 1901 census ?

This could be Edward in 1871 census but I can't find this family in between (apart from Ada who is a servant in 1881 I think)

Mile End Old Town, 1871
William T Marsden, 46, lighterman, Surrey, Bermondsey
Emma ditto, 40, Surrey, Bookham
Emma ditto, 17, domestic servant unemployed,, Surrey, Bermondsey
Arthur ditto,9, scholar, Middlesex, Poplar
Ada ditto,6, ditto, Middlesex,Stepney
Maria ditto, 4,ditto
Edward ditto, 2 ditto

Guess it falls back to the wedding certificate.

My sincere thanks to all who replied, particularly Farside, who came up with the exact Marsden family from the 1901 census...yes Farside...this is the one ...well done ..loved that new spelling for Stepney

1901
16 Cording Street, Bromley, London
Edward W Marsden 32 - Lighterman Barge - b Stepmay?
Eliza W Marsden 28 - b Hackney
Florence E Marsden 4 - b Bromley
Edward J Marsden 3 - b Bromley
Harold E Marsden 8 months - b Bromley

Thanks also to Peterd for the link to Tower Hamlets...I went on that site and rapidly found the two Marsden adults on their search engine and have just sent off a letter requesting copies of the marriage certificate ...only eight pounds including postage to australia

Will be back for more advice when i get the marriage certificate from Tower Hamlets, hopefully within the next two or three weeks

Thanks to all who provided so much help....Pkay
