William Cemm was the son of the late Mrs Ellen Cemm of Brewery Street, Kates Hill, Dudley and served in Worcester Territorials. He joined the 2/7th Battalion in the 59th (Second South Midland) Division which They went to the Western Front in the Spring of 1916 and were posted to a less active sector of the front in Artois near Neuve Chapelle, where they undertook training for the projected Battle of the Somme. Exercises include raids on nearby German trenches and it seems that Private William Cemm was killed in one of these. His body was recovered later and he is buried in Rue du Bacqerot Military Cemetery (II J 6). He was 40 years of age and is commemorated on the Dudley and St. John's, Kates Hill, Memorials.
