Jane Davies 1839-1892

Post by Frodo »

I have just been doing some research into the Payton family with my cousin and I think that the Jane who married Samuel Randle was actually a Sarah Kitson/Kidson baptised 4th June 1809 who married a John Davis (1806-1841) in 1835 before marrying Samuel Randle in 1841having two children from the previous marriage.
On Connection the 1841Census shows the surname Raidy, I think looking at it, it is actually Randle, it is just bad handwriting.
Although I have not found precise dates it looks as though Sarah married Samuel after her husband passed away. John and Jane, the two children are called son/daughter in law in the 1851 Census.
The surname Davies appears as both Davis and Davies, if Sarah did marry John then Davis seems to be the correct variation.
Likewise Sarah's maiden name appears as both Kids on and Kitson but seems to become Kitson as the generations progress.

Yes that is the correct family. The appearance of the Kitson name on the marriage certificate seems to verify that connection although I don't understand why Sarah is down as single on the Samuel Randle marriage.
I have just looked again at the original writing on the 1841 and I am pretty sure that it is Randle not Raidy.

I have a John Davis (1806-1841) marrying Sarah Kitson in 1835 as per the Connection page. The parents I found on Ancestry were William Kitson (1785-1829) and Mary ? (1790). It is still difficult to work out why Sarah is a spinster on the marriage records and John and Jane are called 'in law' on the 1851 Census

In law was used as step children, so I would imagine children of his wife...
I was looking and found this death? no idea if it is John Davis who married Sarah.

Burial. 18th November 1835. St Martin, Holt, Worcestershire
John Davis, aged 26.

Perhaps Sarah was recorded as single on her marriage and Jane's christening because she had her as a widow? Just guessing? Jane, also had John Davis as her father on her marriage record. Is that what her mother told her?

There is this too...
1841. Holt School, Holt, Martley.
Mary Kitson, 50,
John Davis, 5,
Both born in County.

As Jane was born in 1839 I don't think the John Davis you found can be correct. In other Ancestry family trees his death is 1841 but I haven't seen their evidence and there is more than one John Davis.
The information you found about Holt School looks like it makes sense, is there any more to it? In the 1841 Census for Samuel and Sarah only Jane age 2 is listed. In the 1851 Census both Jane and John are with Samuel and Sarah along with their own child William. If the death date others use is correct it must have been very close to when the 1841 Census was taken.

They appear to be in a place of their own. The place previous to that entry...
1841. Holt School, Holt, Martley.
William Nott, 45, Boat Builder
Mary, 40, School Mistress
Louisa, 20,
All born in County

Place after is the Red Lion an Inn

Before the School it listed as Road Fields?

I think Mary is the mother of Sarah's so John was staying with his grandmother?

Holt (Heath) is about 6 miles from Martley, it comes under the registration area of Martley, I know Martley been there many times, and driven through Holt Heath many times.

I agree, I think John was with his grandmother. If my information is correct his grandfather passed away in 1829.
I noticed that John only has Sarah as parent whilst Jane has Sarah Davis. If the marriage of Sarah Kitson and John Davis was November 1935 and John was christened February 1836 then he must have been conceived out of wedlock.
As Jane only has Sarah listed as parent did John pass away or did they split up before the birth?
