James Allen and Sarah

Post by Frodo »

I am trying to confirm the parentage of Sarah who married James Allen (1791-1866) for my cousin in America.

James and Sarah have a joint grave in Smethwick Old Churchyard and her date of death is 17th February 1872 with James having a death date of 29th October 1866.
I have found an entry in Birmingham, Church of England Marriages and Banns for a marriage between a James Allen and a Sarah Bentley on 11th December 1821 at Bartholomew, Edgebaston which makes some sense.

On the 1851 and 1861 Censuses their ages are 7 years apart and 1797 is suggested as Sarah's birth year.
In the Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials there is a Sarah Bentley baptized 1st December 1797 at St. Martin, Birmingham with parents John and Sarah.
I have looked on Ancestry and Family Search and cannot find any more details.
On Ancestry others have used William Bentley (1765-1822) and Sarah Parkes (1763-1840) .
There is a lot of information on Ancestry about these two but on the couple of trees I have checked there doesn't seem to be any evidence supporting using William and Sarah as the parents.

Any information confirming Sarah as a Bentley with either John or William as father please.

Yes that is the correct James Allen, I have been working with my cousin in America on that branch of the family.

Their marriage was witnessed by a Joseph Bentley and (not sure) Mary Newman.
So who was Joseph?

I can't help with either of the names of John Newman and Joseph Bentley aa Sarah is the only Bentley on my Tree and there is limited information about James Allen's parents as well.
As I don't live in the area my knowledge of location is limited but if it helps in the 1851Census Sarah is listed as being born in the parish of Birmingham All Saints, Warwickshire.
