Don't think it was ants
there were 2 baby birds ...maybe magpies
something had put them there and put a rock over

must have been a magpie
these were chicks just out of the egg well couple of days old feathers just onn the wings
those magpies are so clever!

A couple of years ago we were totally invaded by a mass of Seagulls circling at very high altitude, the sky was full of them in every direction for as far as the eye could see for over an hour-totally amazing spectacle. Found out later they were chasing a swarm of flying ants that had just left the nest.

I have been thinking about this and this is quite scary
:o

I believe a magpie or a Crow moved those 2 magpie chicks now as they were quite big chicks,
that bird must have made 2 deliberate journeys
which would explain the commotion that was going on in 2 bursts!
Then put one chick down then the othern on top and then put 2 flatish stones on top

I have never heard of anything like this has anyone else?

ok...back of the house is an ants nest..right in the corner and I had been watching them so had moved some of the loose stones around them. So when I then saw that small 3inch flat rock placed in the corner I knew that something or someone had moved it there.
The chicks were placed right in the corner one on top of other and then rock on top

Fab thing to witness- sounds like mummy Magpie protecting chicks on first flying lesson? Rock to protect them -maybe they crash landed and she couldn't get them back to the nest so gave them what cover and protection was to hand-your rock?

Just another thought- was she just a lazy Mum going to Mcdonalds? Do Maagpie chicks eat ants? Perhaps she had dumped them next to the food while she went off to party?

and I hadn't had a drink by then either!
why don't I think you believe me
:o

I think Magpies are one clever bird! and nasty little blighters

I think they were snatched from the nest by either a Crow or magpie maliciously with malice a forethought!

and

then murdered in the corner by the billiard room with the lead piping
